Norway Nutshell (again) -- Please Comment on Oslo->Bergen/Bergen->Oslo/Bergen<->Bergen

Hi, I'm thinking of doing this trip in May, and I see that the standard advice is to break at the Stalheim hotel -- for example

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34584370

I don't know if I'll take a break yet; I've not thought through the itinerary.

Does it make a difference which route I take (Oslo -> Bergen, Bergen -> Oslo or a round-trip from Bergen)?

Is the scenery better for one particular direction than the reverse? (I remember reading a post about this -- I think that the direction in which the fjord is traversed supposedly matters; it goes from narrow to wide or from wide to narrow, and the poster preferred one to the other.)

Thanks!

I can't help with your questions but if you put this on the Norway board I think you will have a better chance at a response. I'm also planning a Norway trip and noticed that your post does not show there.

Interesting. I thought that everyone just checks the general Europe forum -- I don't really know how to flag a post for an individual country actually. There's been some discussion about it and the consensus seems to be that no one bothers.

detraveler: 111op is correct, there isn't a "Norway board". There is just a general Europe forum. But by checking "Norway" it does let folks search for questions about Norway

111op: FYI for future posts - If you want people to be able to click on Norway to find your threads - when you are posting a new thread, scroll down and highlight Norway in the "subject" field over on the upper right side. But you need to do this before you click "post". It will still be on the general "Europe" forum - but will be easier for people only interested in Norway to find it.

Matter of opinion...we did the Nutshell in one day as do many (Oslo to Bergen)...yes a long day but lovely scenery. My impression is that from Bergen people take train or plane to their next destination.

Thanks janis. I see what you mean when I tried to compose a random post -- interesting how I've just missed that since I'd never have paid any attention.

Thanks Ozarksbill for your comments.

I enjoyed my stay at the Stalheim last summer immensely. We started the NIAN from Oslo and found the break staying over was great. It would have been such a long day of trains, boats, buses to go all the way to Bergen in one day. Click on my name and you should find more detail. I do not recommend doing a round trip, rather continue on to your next destination and enjoy that. We stayed in Bergen for 2 nights and felt that was fine. Distances in Scandinavia can be quite long. There are several low cost air carriers that really helped us use our time wisely. Check out Blue1 and NordicAir. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I got such great information from this site that made my trip memorable.

And while we're on the subject of suggestions, 111op, next time you post a new thread, leave some spaces between the words in the title to prevent the left-hand window from going bonkers, much to the irritation of many of us. Like me.

Thanks A.

The left-hand column appears fine in my browser though, but I'll leave some spaces in the future. Sorry if that caused anyone else a problem. As far as I can see Fodors treats the "-" in the arrow "->" as a hyphen anyway and so allows a possible line break there.

Unfortunately that is not so . . . .

You are lucky that your unbroken line is only a little bit too long and only messes up the left frame a little bit.

Over on the USA board when someone posts a long unbroken title like this they gang up on the poster. They get together and quickly top as many threads as possible to drop the offending thread off the first page. And it sinks into oblivion . . . .

"....they gang up on the poster..." Gee, sounds just like what happens on the Europe board when someone says they don't like Paris or Tuscany!

Well I'm hestitant to top this thread again. Must be browser-dependent -- this one at an Internet cafe is not inserting a line break after "-."

Apologies.
