Norway Itinerary
I am planning a 10 day trip at the beginning of August. It will be helpful to have comments. Day 1: Arrive from USA in Oslo. Overnight in Oslo Day 2: Visit Oslo (suggestions?) overnight train to Stavanger. Day 3: Visit Stavanger (suggestions?) overnight. Day 4: Hike to Preikestolen overnight Stavanger Day 5: Ferry to Bergen Day 6: Visit Bergen ( Hike? ) overnight Bergen Day 7: Take nutshell route Bergen-Voss-Gudvangen-Flam and catch ferry to Balestrand. Overnight Balestrand. Day 8: Balestrand (glacier Hike?) Day 9: Balestrand (hike suggestion?) Day 10: Balestrand ferry to Flam. Trains to Oslo. Overnight Oslo. Day 11: Fly to USA If we buy the rail tickets on line will we have any problems buying the bus or ferry tickets as we travel? My wife and I have done quite a bit of hiking in the Alps so we thought it would be a change just to stay close to the fjords for our hikes. Any suggested hikes will be appreciated. Robert |
By taking the ferry from Flam to Balestrand you'll miss what we thought was one of the most scenic parts of the Nutshell trip--the Naeroyfjord (sp).
http://www.sognefjord.no/fjord/naeroyfjord.asp We spent the night at the Stalheim hotel(at the end of the Naeroyfjord) and then continued on to Balestrand the next morning. Connections to Balestrand from the Stalheim were easy. |
Thank you Marija. We plan to take the ferry from Gudvangen to Flam on our way to Balestrand from Bergen. Will that be too much boat travel for the one day?
Robert |
Sorry, I didn't realize you were doing the "reverse" route, including Gudvangen to Flam. Looks like you will do the train ride going "up" from Flam to Myrdal on your way back to Oslo. We did the Nutshell Bergen--Myrdal--Flam--Gudvangen--Stalheim (night) and then bus/ferry to Balestrand. We really enjoyed the night at the Stalheim. Consider that instead of three nights in Balestrand.

Hi
In Oslo I recommend that you check out the beautiful Vigeland Park. I have posted some pictures and some details on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/oslo_vigeland_park.htm In Stavanger the hike to Preikestolen is nice (http://gardkarlsen.com/preikestolen.htm) but you might also want to consider Kjerag even if it is harder to reach. See this trip report http://gardkarlsen.com/kjerag.htm Get in touch if you have any questions :-) Regards Gard Stavanger, Norway |
While is Oslo, visit the Munch museum. I am not overly fond of art museums but found his work and history to be fascinating. Also, if you are there in the summer, just spend some time wandering around at midnight when it is still light out!

Robert,
If you want to so some walking in Bergen it is worth taking the funicular (or even walking!) up Fløien, the mountain immediately behind the city. There is a range of good walks up there. This may help http://homepage.mac.com/wasleys/norw.../05floien.html Michael |
Railway tickets bought beforehand on the net www.nsb.no or at any railway station. Bus tickets on the bus, likwise ferry tickets on the boat or at dep office. You might consider skip day 9 in Balestrand, stay overnight at Flåm or Aurland instead. Take bus to Østerbø tourist hut in Aurlandsdalen www.dntoslo.no, hike down to Vassbygd and corresponding bus to Flåm, then resume travel to Oslo. Hike is 5-6 hrs, easy for the experienced, hiking boots not a "must". Bus schedule www.fjord1.no

How long does it take to do the Bergen - Myrdal - Flam - Gudvagen - Stalheim trip? And after one night in Stalheim how long is the bus or ferry to Balestrand? How does one get from Balestrand back to Oslo?
|
We did Norway in a Nutshell tour from Bergen in one day: Bergen - by train Voss - Mydral - Flaam - by ferry - Gudvangen - by coach - Stalheim - Voss - by train back to Bergen - all in one day.
Great trip!! |
If I have only 5 days in Norway would you suggest to do this all in one day? We figured 2 days Bergen, 1 day oslo, NIN tour 2 days?
