Norway in Nutshell - weather

We plan to do the Norway in a Nutshell during our stay in Bergen, Norway. We'll be there 4 days. Would I be safe to wait until we are there to purchase tickets, so that Ii can select the day with the best weather? Or does it ever sell out, so that I should purchase in advance?
We will be in Bergen Aug. 12-16
Thanks
Sue

My impression of just going there and buying all component tickets in Bergen's train station was that they never get filled but put on additions buses and boats - I do not think the buses and boats even take reservations but not sure - trains do but they are optional Bergen to Voss and Myrdhal to Bergen - going to or from Oslo I think they are mandatory - the Flam train I don't think takes reservations.

Hopefully someone with more current knowledge - my trip was severl years ago and there were no needed reservations then - of the current situation - a question to ask is can reservtions be changed without a hefty fee?

thank you.

I'm topping this to bring it back up for others to comment who have been on the NIN more recently to confirm that things have not changed.

anyone else had more recent experience with NIN - regards reservations needed or not? I'm curious if changes have been made and wish to have up to date personal reports if any!

You can buy tickets from NSB Bergen-Flåm or Oslo-Flåm which include the Flåm rail after changing at Myrdal. https://www.nsb.no/en/ Buying up to 90 days in advance gets you minipris, a considerable saving on full price refundable tickets - these tickets are limited and can sell out quickly.
For the ferry it is probably not necessary to book, but it can be done here: https://www.visitflam.com/en/sightse...rds/whc-round/
The bus to Voss cannot be booked, pay the driver. The train Voss-Bergen is usually a local train and cannot be booked.
The pass is convenient for a round trip from Bergen, but there are no reserved seats. From Oslo there is considerable saving buying the minipris tickets - the pass includes full price refundable tickets. Ticket is valid for specific departure with a reserved seat.
You need to follow the FjordTours NiN timetable to make the connections for a day trip - http://www.norwaynutshell.com

Thanks dyoll = are there ever full ferries?

I also spent four days in Bergen with one day for the NIN trip. I waited till I got there to buy the tickets for the same reason you - wanted the trip for the best day weather wise. I got the tickets at the tourist information center the day I got there. One portion of the trip - Myrdal to Flam did indeed sell out. There were enough options that I was able to make it work, but some portions can sell out.

OK, that's scary, to know it could sell out. I think I'll end up talking a chance on the weather and purchase in advance.

Can the flam train reservations be changed, subject to availability of seats, once in Bergen?

isabel May 30th, 2015 07:52 AM

I was there in peak tourist season and while one leg of the NIN did sell out, there was at least one more option (which I took) - it just meant I had to leave earlier and have more time in Flam than the other option that I preferred. If I had been willing to go the following day both options were available. So if you are going to be there four days I think it's unlikely that you couldn't find some schedule that would work for you.

NSB local train tickets are valid on the day for any departure. If you book minipris then they are not refundable/changeable. Full price tickets with seat reservation are refundable up to time of departure, for a fee of NOK100 in last 24 hrs. You would then have to make a new booking.

Flåm rail is a private company with their own regulations - from their FAQ at https://www.visitflam.com/en/useful/faq-en/

Can I take a different departure on the Flam railway than the one specified on my ticket?
If there are available seats you may take a different departure. If the train is full, it is not possible.
