Norway In A Nutshell Hotel

Hi, we are planning to do the Norway In A Nutshell from Oslo to Bergen and as part of this tour package from Scanam tours we will have an overnight in either of these hotels. The Fretheim Hotel, or Gudvangen Fjordtel or Fleisher's Hotel. We also have the option of a upgrade for $46 ea. to the Stalheim. Is anyone familiar with any of these choices and can you give me a suggestion as to which one to pick? Many thanks.

We've stayed at the Stalheim and loved it. It has an incredible setting. For pictures visit

Agree with above...Stalheim is incredible... eye-popping views...and a good midway point. Next day, you'll be in Bergen after a short bus ride and train to Bergen. The Nutshell Tour is fabulous...camera-ready at all times!
We did it in one day, but after a rest stop at Stalheim it sold us on stopping over next time. By the way, if you don't want to drag your luggage check with the RR station in Oslo about shipping overnight to wherever you'll be staying Bergen. We did it for a total of $22 for two bags.

I concur with the other posters that it's worth the extra $ to upgrade to the Stalheim. Fabulous views and so peaceful after the rushing on trains, boats, and buses from Oslo...everyone gets off the bus for a short stop (maybe 15-30 minutes) and you get to stay at the gorgeous hotel. Well, the hotel isn't gorgeous, but the location is to die for. We had the smorgasbord dinner and it was our evening's entertainment. There was a piano player in the lounge that was enjoyable. He was on our bus the next day on our way to town to catch the train to Bergen.

We don't know about the upgrade options, but the Fretheim was an excellent choice. Its position at the head of the Sognefjord afforded wonderful views and easy access to the Flåmsbana, the train up to the top of the valley, with the world's steepest rail grade...a round-trip ride that's well worth the price. Also, there are a few short hiking treails from the Fretheim that are worth exploring.
