Norway in a Nutshell from Bergen

Hello!

I'll be doing Norway in a Nutshell from Bergen this October and have 2 options to choose from. If I go via Voss, I'll only have 30 mins in Flam. But if I go via Myrdal, I'll have 4 hours in Flam (though the trip will start and end earlier/later in Bergen). It is essentially the same route just that it is done in opposite directions.

Would it be good to depart earlier from Bergen and stay in Flam for 4 hours? I checked that I could squeeze a 1h 30min tour to Stegastein lookout within that period. However, the train from Bergen to Myrdal starts at 7.57am and sun will only rise at 8.25am. Likewise, the Voss to Bergen train will depart at 6.40pm, after sunset. Will I miss out on anything?

For Bergen-Voss-Gudvangen-Flam-Myrdal-Bergen, the trip starts at 8.43am and ends at 6pm which is well within daylight hours. But I'll only have 20 mins in Flam (not enough time for a trip to Stegastein lookout).

Thanks!

I did it in June, so everything was in daylight! The first portion - the part nearest Bergen - was the least scenic (not that it wasn't nice, it's just the rest was better). I had the exact same dilemma and wondered if I wanted that long in Flam. I ended up going for that option and I walked up to the little farm museum on a hill. It wasn't the most spectacular part of the trip to Norway, but it was certainly pleasant.

Here's my trip report and photos - http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...r-four-day.cfm

Hi Isabel,

Your trip report has been a great help to me! I think I'll take the via Myrdal direction and have a 4hr stop at Flam and include a Stegastein lookout coach tour.

Thanks!

Don't forget there are long periods of twilight. It's not dark until the sun rises and nor dark as soon as the sun sets.

If you are doing the NiN round trip from Bergen in October then it's very much off season and no need to book any of the transport. You could wait until the day before and decide according to the weather - no point in staying 4 hours in Flåm, which will be a ghost town, if it's pouring with rain and blowing a gale - http://www.yr.no/place/Norway/Sogn_o...#229;m~124317/

Do you recommend sitting on any particular side of the bus or train? I will be taking the same trip except going one way to Oslo from Myrdal. Thanks.
