Norway in a Nutshell and Oslo
Hello,
I have 3 days for Norway in a Nutshell and Oslo, leaving from Bergen.
Our initial plan was to do a daytrip for Norway in a Nutshell and then spend 2 days in Oslo. Another idea could be sleeping in Flam and then spending just one day in Oslo.
What do you recommend?
- 2 days for NIN and 1 day in Oslo
- 1 day for NIN and 2 days in Oslo
Thanks

We have been on the NIN tour twice -once from Bergen and once from Oslo. We have stayed overnight on the fjord.
With the amount of time that you have I would recommend taking the NIN trip from Bergen to Oslo. Stay overnight in Oslo 2 nights. It is nice on the fjord but there are so many things to see in Oslo it would be better to have 2 full days.
If you leave Bergen one morning you will get into Oslo in the evening.
That will be one night.
Anyway I would recommend at least 2 days in Oslo. There is Vigeland Sculpture Garden, the Viking Museum, Norwegian Folk Museum, shopping, the Royal Palace tour, walking up and down Karl Johansgata which is so interesting,

Just did this last month, though we have more time than you do.
We did an overnight at Stalheim Hotel on our NIN.....and very much enjoyed it. On the other hand, we found that there's also so much to do in Oslo that just 1 day does not give it justice.
If you lack time, I would suggest 1 day NIN and 2 days in Oslo.
Have fun!

Last month, my husband and I traveled from Oslo to Bergen via Norway in a Nutshell. We split the trip into two days and were glad that we did. Although many people manage NIAN as a day trip, we both felt that, for us, it would have been a very long day of travel.
I notice in another of your posts that you ask about days in Oslo vs days in Helsinki. Taking the information from both posts into account, I would recommend two days NIAN, two days Oslo, and one day in Helsinki. We really enjoyed our four days in Oslo as we found that there was plenty of interest to do and see. Additionally, after two days in transit via NIAN, my personal preference would be to have more than one day in one place before moving on.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Norway. Enjoy!

Think I have posted to you before and I just want to say again that Helsinki is a great city and deserves more than one day.
Oslo is great too - have been there a few times. Love it but think they deserve equal time.

My husband and I want to plan a trip to Norway and Germany where our families came from. Where in the world do we start with planning? How do you schedule ahead and know how much time to allow for travel between places?

VikingW: use travel forums like this or TA/VT, make search for topics and places, use plane between main cities, bus/train/rental car elsewhere, if possible book ahead, take direct contact with hotels/pensions, use a travel agency if unsure, above all, do not rush !

Another option that i do not know still exists is to take an overnight train right from Flam back to Oslo or v.v. - one sleeper car used to leave from Flam and be attached to the Bergen-Oslo night train - but now you may have to go by the Flam train up to Bergen but i guess you want to see the great scenery on this short train ride and in summer days are very long

Viking woman
the way i start is by asking all and sundry "who has been to ..." it is amazing the people i find who can answer my questions
i was at my local dogpark - saw a blonde woman who spoke with an accent - asked her where she was from
and what do you know? SWEDEN!
picked her brains
i ask everyone i know to be on the lookout for people they know who have been somewhere im interested ,,,
that way i know what that person is like in the way of tastes and priorities- in other words i try to see if that person recommending a place is at all like me and OH
yes the forums are terrific but talking to a person or even a stranger is a wonderful way of getting information
i cant believe my OH - he sat with a russian diplomat on a plane once and didnt ask a thing!!!!!!!!!
he sat with a swedish woman on a chairlift- and again didnt ask a thing
i wouldve known their starsign within 14 minutes!
we also use travel brochures- look at what the coaches cover and try to plot out a route in similar time frame
let people know youre travelling and theyll all come out of the woodwork with their recommendations
the reason we are going to tallinn is because my boss' sisterinlaw went and he passed on that info to me
word of mouth is a powerful thing
