We did the trip from Bergen. It was an amazing day, not to be missed.
|
For anyone that has done NIN, is it crazy to consider this in February?
Thanks! - Pam |
There is practically no daylight in February so the answer is obvious
|
It'll be cold and weather may not be nice, but shortest day of year is December 21st/22nd. By late Feb, you'll get quite a few hours of daylight.
|
yeh i was wrong about daylight because by spring solstice Mar 21 or so it should be about 12 hrs and 12 hrs everywhere and things start speeding up in Feb a lot
but IMO this fantastic excursion would be well worth taking anytime of year, daylight of course |
We will be in Bergen late June and want to do Norway in a Nutshell. We are considering staying somewhere along the route before heading on to Oslo. We will be leaving at the earliest time for the tour from Bergen - do you recommend staying in Flam, Voss, Myrdal, or ? Any tips on hotels that are $150 (US) or less?
|
Flam would be my choice because it's on the fjord - dramatically located on the awesome fjord
yet it's a small town - maybe too small for some so unless you wish for great natural setting try the other two - pleasant but to me typically boring modern Scandinavian towns. Voss does have the grave of Knute Rockne. Myrdhal of course is closer to Oslo than Voss which is much closer to Bergen |
Hello all - we, too, will be visiting Norway in February. We arrive Saturday in Oslo around noon and leave on the Hurtigruten from Bergen at 10pm Sunday. My first thought was to take Norway in a Nutshell despite limited sunlight, but perhaps it's better to take a direct train and spend the extra time in Bergen? Any opinions?
If we do take NiN, I have not yet been able to check the schedules to understand flexibility - reading the posts it seems like you can start whenever, but the website only shows an 8am start time. Could we get to Stalheim that night, and would it be worth it with such low light? Thanks! - Pam |
Pam,
I doubt Stalheim Hotel is open in February, and even if it is the bus on the Nutshell service doesn't go that way in winter. Michael |
Pamdamage: if you're arriving in Oslo at noon on a Saturday and leaving Bergen the next day in the evening, there is no time to do NiN. I don't want you to miss the boat if you do NiN on the Sunday from Bergen.
You're better off doing sightseeing in either Oslo or Bergen (the latter is favoured by us over Oslo). After arrival in Oslo take the train to Bergen and stay the night there. The train ride will give you a good chance to sleep and recover the lost sleep after the overnight flight across the pond. Also, you can board the Hurtigruten ship at about 6-7 pm and enjoy dinner aboard before the ship sets sail. Bergen is a delightful place. |
The NSB Oslo-Bergen train timetable is here: http://tinyurl.com/ywmr3e
Suggest you take the 16.07 train - this will allow you time to get to Oslo main station from airport. There is supposed to be a dinner car on the train. Enjoy! |
This is a great thread!
We (Mom and 23 yr old daughter) are traveling on Easter Sunday, March 23 one way from Oslo. Are there any events, closures etc we should be aware of? Where would be the most entertaining place to overnite during this time of year, Flam or Voss ? Other posters talk about multiple boat/bus times and the ability to adjust their trip as they go. Are the schedules during March such that one could do this then also? We will go on to Bergen for 2 nites and fly out from there. Any suggestions would be appreciated! |
Thanks all - just booked the 16:07 train!
