Norway for 7 days

Hi All,

I am traveling to Norway in May. I am spending two full days and nights in Oslo. I am then renting a car for five full days (4 nights, fly out fifth night) to explore around Bergen and other fjord/hiking areas. If you have any suggestions as a good itinerary that includes Bergen and surrounding fjords, I would love to hear suggestions.

Thanks!

That would be 2 of your 5 days dedicated to long transport drives - if you are going to drive back to Oslo. If not then a hefty one-way fee on the car hire. Perhaps take the Norway in a Nutshell tour to Bergen by train and ferry. A day in Bergen then hire a car for a couple of days touring around Hardangerfjord, then you'll have time for a little hiking, though there'll still be snow on the higher parts in May. If you are returning to Oslo then take the night sleeper train.

Personally , I would spend a night and a day in Oslo then fly in to Evenes to hire a car and drive through the Lofotens which are simply world class stunning.

The only difficulty is the flight back from Evenes which I seem to remember is very early in the morning.

It's easy to fly to Bodo and then take the ferry to The Lofotens if Evenes doesn't work.

Thank you! We were also thinking of going to Jottunheim National Park>Voss>Harvangervidda Park and skipping Bergen. Is that a bad idea? Seems like less driving and gets plenty of hiking in. We are going the first week of May. We were also thinking of skipping Jottunheim and just going Voss>Bergen>Harvdangervidda Park. Let me know your recommendations! Is one park better than the other? Which is not worth missing Bergen or Jottunheim?

Thanks!

Well, Bergen is a favorite city in our travels. And best accessed via the Nutshell train-boat. Your above plans may afford you more hiking or whatever.

which is the park to prioritize hardangervidda or jotunheimen?

May is too early for either - there will still be a lot of snow on high ground. Some tourist roads that are closed in winter are not opened until around mid May, sometimes not even before June.

Thank you for the info! We have revised our route from two nights in oslo, one night in voss, two nights in bergen, and then we have one more night before we head back to Oslo and fly out. Where do you suggest we go halfway between Bergen and Oslo near Hardangervidda so we explore day before we leave?

any must dos in voss and bergen?

How are you travelling now? Voss is a ski resort and May is too late for skiing, not a great place otherwise for a stop. If you are driving then on your return drive through Hardangerfjord area. Skip the night in Voss and take it in Hardangerfjord area - if you are lucky perhaps you'll hit apple blossom time - http://www.hardangerfjord.com/en/Art...-in-Hardanger/

We are traveling by car. Do you suggest we hit Flam instead of Voss?

Thinking
Day 1 arrive morning in Oslo spend night
Day 2 enjoy Oslo stay there over night
Day 3 Pick up car drive to Flam or Voss stay overnight
Day 4 enjoy voss or flam for the day drive to bergen stay overnight
Day 5 enjoy bergen stay there over night
Day 6 drive to odda early to trolltunga hike
Day 7 drive back to oslo fly out at night

Neither, Flåm is a crowded cruise port and Voss a ski resort. Try Handangerfjord as I suggested - perhaps Eidfjord.

Eidfjord is quite small, and then it's overrun by cruiseships. Easy access to Hardangervidda though.

Hardangerfjord can be easily reached on a bus + fast ferry daytrip from Bergen, so I'd just do another night in Bergen.

There's a lot of hiking to be had in and around Bergen.

Stay a night at Norheimsund for Hardangerfjord trip
