Norway cities
Anyone who has been to Alesund, Geirangerfjord, Flam and Bergen.....what are the best things to see and experience in these towns? these are stops on a RCCL cruise that I am taking in mid May 2013. Any ideas about what to see....

The Flam railroad and a boat ride on a fjord.

Alesund is an art deco town. It burned down at the start of the last century and was rebuilt in art deco style. It is lovely. There is a nice museum there which is in the old chemist shop. It tells the story of the fire, and you can see the house as it was left by the chemist.
If you are on a cruise there will probably be a walking tour organised - I recommend you take that. You can learn so much from the local guide. In Bergen the Bryggen is the obvious thing to see, along with the museum, Håken's Hall and Rosenkrantz tower. Also the steep streets with wooden houses across the harbour from Bryggen. Take the Fløibanen funicular up for a good view of the town, and a walk. You could walk down for instance if you feel you want some exercise. There is a collection of Munch paintings in the Bergen Art Museum. There is also the Fantoft Stave Church, and the Edvard Grieg house, but you will need to organise transportation for those. Have a look at the Visit Norway website for lots of valuable information. Pack a raincoat or umbrella! |
Oops Alesund is Art Nouveau not Deco!

Here are some scenes of Norway which may help to familiarize you with some of the locations you've mentioned (Alesund, geirangerfjord, Flam and Bergen specifically)..also some of the sites Heitismij noted (Grieg's home in an idyllic location south of Bergen, the stave churches including Fantoft near the Grieg home, the Bryggen and the Floibanen views...) If you're gong to be in Oslo, that, too...plus Trondheim, Bodo, the black ice glacier, the Lofotens and Tromso). You will enjoy Norway..guaranteed! stu https://picasaweb.google.com/stuartt...uHk6iIgbSEgAE# |
take bus from Bergen's municipal terminal, for Troldhaugen..short ride...it will drop you about a ten minute walk to the home and grounds.

If you have nice weather in Bergen, it can really be a great place to just wander and take in the sights.
We honestly couldn't stop taking pictures there: http://onelittleworld.zenfolio.com/p61862415 Other than that, I think hetismij2's recommendations are spot on. |
In bergen, do check out the Sandviken area to the north of Bryggen. And yes to the Troldhaugen excursion. The funicular to Fløyen is also nice, with a stroll down to the city through Sandviken, of course. Flåm is a bit of a tourist trap. But the rail journey can be nice, if that's your thing. This is nice too:
