Norway by car in 4 weeks - itinerary ideas?

Me and my husband will be visiting Norway in August for 4 weeks, probably arriving at Stavanger by ferry. I'm researching frantically at the moment and thoughts are on working up along the fjords, working north (as far as possible), then backing up and travelling south to Olso via the centre of Norway (the aim is to drive back home (to England) via Oslo and down through Denmark/ Belguim/France).
Any itinerary suggestions for a 'loop around' would be appreciated - I am becoming bamboozled by websites, maps and guidebooks! To help with ideas - we have an 8 and a half year old with us, we will be camping - a combination of campsite based and wild camping (we hope) we want to walk, see nature at its best and wildest, sightsee and would love to get as far north as possible. AND keep our son happy too! We drove around and through Iceland last year so anyone who knows what thats like will know what we are after. Anyway any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

4 weeks you can cover all of the country then. from stavanger Pulpit Rock should be a must, then Western Fjords with glaciers and high mountains. what about some days on a farm ? http://www.nbg-nett.no/index_en.html
some hiking ? http://www.turistforeningen.no/english/

your kid would not be so interested in scenery as yourselves, so a hike with guide to Galdhøpiggen from Juvasshytta ?
Links via above. Fishing in Lofoten, whale watching, Fun Parks, olympic bobsleigh Lillehammer ? Polaria Tromsø -

Hi

Greetings from Stavanger. In the Stavanger area I would suggest going to Kjerag instead of Pulpit rock (Preikestolen)...at least if you are used to a bit of trekking. See my trip report on http://gardkarlsen.com/kjerag.htm . The drive there from Stavanger is quite scenic and you can even take a boat into Lysebotn through the Lyse fjord and see Preikestolen and Kjerag from below. I think you can camp out in Lysebotn. Here are some pictures and some information about Stavanger: http://gardkarlsen.com/stavanger.htm

What about North Cape (Nord Kapp) - the nothernmost place on mainland Europe.

Also Kautokeino in Lappland (north of Norway) - you can drive there from Tromso thru a bit of Finland. It's good place to vist to see Lapp people and culture.

We did a 3800 mile driving odyssey in Scandinavia in summer 1990 - started and ended in Stockholm - went thru Sweden into Norway at Trondheim and drove all the way north to North Cal and east to Kirkenes, and down thru Finland back to Stockholm - 3 weeks driving and 1 week in Stockholm.
