Norway: Advice on travel esp. Lofoten

My husband and I will be spending about 13 days in Norway this summer while our kids are in camp. We plan to start in Oslo, go to Bergen by train, explore the Sognefjord area a bit, and then take the Hurtigruten from Bergen to Alesund via Geiranger. We are planning on using public transportation throughout. We are thinking about also going to the Lofoten Islands for 3 days or so of the trip. Does anyone have any advice to share about how feasible it is to get around the Lofoten without a car? It seems like there's good bus service on the E10, but that it might be hard to get around. We'd like to poke into some of the villages, and do some hiking and kayaking. Any thoughts on which town might be a good base? And, does anyone have any advice about taking the ferry from Bodo to Moskenes v. taking the bus from the airport in Evenes? Or, should we ditch the idea of the Lofoten and concentrate on the fjord area, do a glacier hike in/around Jostedal, etc.?

Thanks!
