Northwest Italy by car
Renting a car in Nice for 7 day tour of NW Italy in late September. After a brief visit to Monaco, we want to find an Airbnb located between the coast and the mountains and explore smaller villages. If a day for urban experience and art is used, we may include Milan, but that is not our primary focus of this trip. Would love to hear suggestions about what to see in this timeframe of the year. We are familiar with using Airbnb for lodging and have enjoyed it very much on trips to other countries. This is the first time to Italy for one of us, while the other has been to Milan for a few days years ago. Your sharing of information and advice would be greatly appreciated.

What is your departure airport?

Which mountains?
Along French to Italian Riviera and through Ligurian coast, the mountains are AT the coast.
Unless you are returning the car back in France, do a dummy rental car booking to see the sticker shock associated with the car rental. This is related to the question posed by the previous poster stated differently.

Italian Riviera or the Piedmonte?

What do you mean with Northwest Italy?
Mont Blanc? Matterhorn? Gran Paradiso? Lago Maggiore?

For not wanting to spend too much time on the road, we're thinking about a base near Imperia. Yes, the Piedmont range to the north for some higher elevation adventure is what I had in mind when making a vague reference to mountains in the north. I'm sure the ones along the coast are beautiful, too, and I'm very interested in others' experiences in some of the many villages in the area. For the car rental, we're picking up one in Nice and will return it there. This is a side trip, if you will, from exploring Morocco before and after a roundtrip to Nice airport.

Gran Paradiso and Lago Maggiore areas look very interesting. GP would likely be quicker and easier for this shorter stay. Any advice or suggestions for these two? Thanks for calling out these alpine areas for reference points!

We just returned from the area and spent 3 nights at Gran Paradiso. It was off season, so it was pretty quiet. (we were the only two in the hotel the first night). We loved it... we had 2 beautiful days of hiking, then the third night it snowed 6 or 8 inches!!

We are big thermal water fans, so we also visited pres st. didier. we stayed at their sister hotel, qcmontebianco, which had gorgeous views of mont blanc. from here, it is easy to go through the tunnel to chamonix, which is about 45 minutes, i think.

let me know if you have specific questions. haven't posted a trip report yet. maybe too lazy this time. oh... and we actually were surprised that we loved torino so much, which isn't too far away.

The motorway distance to both areas is more or less the same.

Thank you both very much for the links and information. Very helpful and interesting. Will ask back, if needed.

Kawh, I hope you had a great time. Must be a beautiful place, I'm sure.
