Northern Spain - language course/ renting a villa/ cottage & other

My husband and I are travelling to Northern Spain at the end of September for 5 weeks. The main aim is to learn Spanish & explore the culture. We would like to rent a place (villa/ cottage)in a small town, but where we still can do the course.

Our preference list:

1. Learn Spanish
2. Stay in a small/ not too touristy town, we are not into casinos/ night life, but love wine tasting, mountains, authentic towns
3. To rent a small cottage/ villa for 2 weeks
4. Explore Norther Spain (we decided not to go south, as it appears to be v. hot)

So far we have considered the following:

1. Santander - may be tryingt to rent in Santillana / Camillas. But reading through messages, it appears that Santander is rather ordinary & modern(?)
2. San Sebastian - seem to be very few places to rent or they are very expensive. Also, I think there is film festival.

Would really appretiate help/ ideas on everything, in particular if anyone knows real estate agencies that are reputable/ done courses in Spain

Thanks,

Sarah

You've got a great plan. I have done it several times and will do it again. I have always gone south so can't help with specific school. Two towns that are on my "go back to" list are Llanes and Luarca. I have not however been able to locate schools there. Have you done a search on "spanish schools"? There are a number of sites which list them.

I once did a wonderful six week course in San Sebastian that was run by the University of Salamanca. But that was back in 1966. I agree that SS is very upmarket these days, but it is a very nice town in a nice setting. There are some very attractive beaches to the west, such as Zarauz, and an interesting hinterland.

I suppose your choice of town is pretty much determined by where courses are available.

Thank you so much to all who replied. If anyone else has any ideas, knowledge of the area, I would really appretiate help. Especially, if you have details of real estate agents in Santander & San Sebastian. Also, is it worth staying in Santilanna or would is Santander better as a base (again, we love nature & little towns & squares with cafe culture).

You can stay in Santillana del Mar it's a great place an hour from Santander. Then you can go to Asturias and stay in one of the towns Llanes, Oviedo and after that you should visit Galicia and go to Santiago de Compostela.
Good Luck!
