Northern Scotland

Planning to visit Wick and Thurso in October. From Edinburgh, how much driving time to get there. Do we need stay over spots and if so, where? With thanks, Cat

According to the RAC website
http://www.rac.co.uk/

6 h 16 min if you are lucky with traffic or 7 h 40 min if you are unlucky with traffic.
That's a lot of driving on Scottish roads.

I think that I'd stop off somewhere, possibly Inverness.

Inverness is the logical stop over - but I'd recommend someplace a bit nicer. Since you are now talking about 2 days for the drive there is no reason to divide the distance in half. I'd suggest someplace like Grantown-on-Spey or Beauly/Strathpeffer

If I was GOING to Wick/ Thurso, I'd not dream of a stop over.

It's 6 hours. The roads are (mostly) dual carriageway as far as Inverness and pretty good single carriageway north of there- also much less trafficked north of there.
