Northern Pyrenees in Late September
 

We are thinking of driving from San Sebastian/Donostia to Bayonne and back in late September, is snow usually a problem or should we simply take the train?

There shouldn't be any problem in late September. The Irrati Forest will be showing its fall colors (http://www.turismo.navarra.es/eng/or...so.aspx?o=3041) and it will still be warm if you drive up through Roncesvalles, but the road to Bayonne is along the coast.

The only snow you'll see will be in the Aragon Pyrenees.

Right now, the air fares from NYC to MAD are insane. So we will probably fly through Dublin with a standard carrier and still save hundreds of dollars. We have the extra days.

Be sure to visit the Musée Basque (musee-basque.com) while in Bayonne (Baïona in Basque).

For lunch you can try chef Christophe Pascal's Le Bayonnais, at 38 Quai des Corsaires, or Le Bistrot Itsaski at 43 Quai Amiral Jaureguiberry, across the river.

Of course the top restaurant in Bayonne is still Le Cheval Blanc, at 68 Rue Bourgneuf (www.cheval-blanc-bayonne.com/en). Reservations required. There is a lunch menu for only 24€, a glass of wine included.

We are taking the route of least resistance. We will be driving from San Sebastian/Donostia. I have not driven in that part of the world. Walked, flew, train, bus, but not driven.

You'll have to have some change to pay the tolls at the border and to continue on to Bayonne. You can take the coastal route, getting off the highway before the airport in Biarrtiz and save a few euros, but it's slower going.

We usually take the old smuggler's route through Bera in Navarra, which takes you through Sare, where you can stop for coffee. From there you can be in Bayonne in under an hour, avoiding the heavy traffic on the A-63. It's a much nicer drive.
