We live (half the time) in Lytham, we drove to Stanstead.

We went to Tromso this past March. The town is fun, and there was plenty to keep us occupied during the day; Hiking around the town, several museums, some shopping, a bus trip up to the fiords, a short boat trip, and dogsledding.

The sledding was the highlight of our trip! We slept in a Sami tent overnight then went out with the dogs in the morning.for days. They provided all the warm gear we needed, so it was awesome to lay out in the snow and watch the stars. that was the only night we saw the lights out of 6, in a period when the lights were supposed to be really strong. It all boils down to luck.

From other visitors, I heard that March, with more daylight is a better time in the arctic. Christmas is really too dark for doing much walking around.

Mid winter wasn't really that bad, the latitude isn't extreme. Also depends on what you are used to , from Florida it could be down right depressing. In the UK we don't see an awful lot of the sun anyway.

Tromso had a twilight from around 11am to around 2pm. It certainly wasn't a case of 24 hours pitch black.
