Northern Light

Has anyone been to Finland or other parts of Europe to see the Northern Light?

lillehavfrue Jul 27th, 2003 01:11 AM

I've been in northern Norway in the winter and saw lots of northern lights, but that was not my reason for going there.

No, but I can see them out of my living room window most winters.

@lillehavfrue: could you tell me which month and what place did you go in Norway to see the northern light? I am planning to go to see it this winter. I may change my plan to Norway instead.

@sheila: can you tell me where are you from? and which months do you have more chance to see it. I know it's a natural phenomenon, but it will be very disappointing if the whole purpose of the trip is to see it but come home empty hand. Please advice.

December/January

You can't guarantee it in Scotland, KY, where I am. It comes down to particular conditions and when they come together.

It makes it wonderful when it happens because it's not a given.

Sorry. I guess I was being a bit flippant.

Displays of the Northern Lights are more frequent as you go north, but the "never guaranteed" aspect can't be over-emphasized. I've seen brilliant displays in Iceland. Get a window seat on the left side of the plane (as you face forward) on your night flight to Europe from North America and you will have the opportunity to possibly see the Northern Lights on your way over. There are tours in Iceland specifically for people who want to see the Northern Lights, but they also warn people that a sighting is not assured. (I didn't take the tour. You just need to find a place where you are away from city lights and not under cloud cover to see the Northern Lights if they are up there on a particular night.)

Thanks for all the info.

@lillehavfrue: where exactly in Norway did you see it?

KY.......depending on where you are located, you might want to consider the Northern Lights of Canada. This site might help you.......http://www.westcanadatours.com/north...ts/index.shtml
