I recall the rail station was close, maybe a 10-15 minute walk, but I don't recall sidewalks; you might have to walk along the side of the road.The island can be done easily in a couple of hours; it is quite small. We saw the island and the mountain chapels in one day and still did a drive around the island. We liked the little village of Orta San Giulio (many gelato places but two were exceptional) and a great square for a nice meal and a glass of wine as you watch the lights on the island. Without a car, your time there will be more leisurely than you may want, but in late September, we liked the vibe of mostly Italians who seemed to go there for an evening out. Not the same tourists we found on both visits to Stresa. ×
