Northern Italy and Tuscany
We will be visiting Milan, Garda, Dolomites, Verona, Venice, Florence, Siena and Cinque Terre 6/14 - 7/6. Any suggestions for off the beaten path hikes/drives/restaurants? We're active seniors, and love adventure.
Thanks. |
For Milan, the Pinoteca Ambrosiana. For the Cinque Terre, try walking uphill in Manarola or take the train to Sestre Levante and enjoy the beach. Venice: A restaurant in the Dorsoduro called "Do Farai". For Lago di COmo, a restaurant called Il Crotto di Pino about a 5 minute taxi drive from Varenna. Florence: Museo San Marco. Verona: The art museum (don't miss it) and the duomo. Garda: Find your own by just walking away from the crowds. ;-)

Where will you be in the Dolomites? That will help me make suggestions for hikes and things to see.

Thanks for advice. Can we hike through the Cinque Terre in one day? AS I said, we are very active, and avid hikers.
Re where we'll be in Dolomites -- nothing set yet except we are planning for four days there coming from the Lake District, and heading toward Verona. Clothing question -- can I wear a tangerine cotton knit running suit in Italy. I'm planning on wearing it to fly from Los Angeles for comfort's sake, and hope it doesn't have to sit in my suitcase until the flight home. |
Hi Michaelynn,
The nice thing about the Cinque Terre is that you can hike as far as you want and train back if you poop out. The train stops at all 5 towns. The orange knit running suit might be a good flight idea, but it's a bad one for Italy in the summer. Much too hot! Think breathable, loose, easy wash clothing. Linen, light weight cotton, gauze, etc. Buon viaggio! |
Nessundorma, Can you give me for info on Il Crotto di Pino? I had just printed out their website and it looked like a GREAT walk from Varenna (the website says one hour) and then cab back after dinner. It says about 18 euro for dinner. The website's in Italian. What kind of food? is it a special place? need reservations in advance for a summer weekend? we are vegetarians who eat fish. Thanks so much. I can't believe i saw this mention after just learning about the restaurant online!
