Northern Italy and the lake district

We are planning a trip to northern Italy and the lakes. I am interested in small towns around the lakes and would love some suggestions for an itinerary. We will include Verona and I would like to revisit Varenna which I visited 35 years ago. Thanks for any help.

Which of the lakes are you planning to visit? Garda, Como, Lugano, and Maggiore? Will you be driving or taking the train? These factor in for what responses you would receive.

When are you going? How much time do you have? No one can help you with an itinerary without knowing the basic facts.

We spent only one night in Stresa at the Hotel La Palma which is on Lake Maggiore. We had taken the train there from Venice & stayed the night before our flight out of Milan. The area was stunning and the town of Stresa was lovely. We so wish we had more time to spend but it was a great taste of the area and an incredible place to stay the night before flying home.

Hi kb,

Do you have any particular Lake in mind?

Have you considered Orta de san Giulio?

We were thinking of driving but if ferries and trains are easier we would do that instead. Any suggestions on which lakes and towns you like best? We will be going at the beginning of August and have about 17 days.

Thanks for your reply.

Kitty,
We've stayed in Stresa several times and explored from there. We thoroughly enjoy Stresa and Lago Maggiore. Would recommend a car for greatest mobility and convenience.
