Northern German Town - Lubeck

Has any one been to the German town of Lubeck? Is there a better town in Northern Germany to stay at for two days before going south?

Hi becky!

Lübeck is in fact a very beautiful town with an amzing city centre (Unesco World heritage). It's defintetely worth a trip. There are plenty of towns in Northern Germany worth staying a few days... Bremen has a very nice city centre too (www.bremen.de). Schwerin is my personal favorite (very well restored-amazing architecture/www.schwerin.de) and of course good old Hamburg. Amazing cosmopolitan city with all faces of a major town like Munich or Berlin.(www.Hamburg.de). All websites are in English too.
Andy

Hi Becky -

We were in Lubeck last July and it is indeed a great town! Also nearby Rostock of the former East Germany... (which makes it even the more interesting) is a good town to visit as well... also it's neighboring village of Wandermunda (sp) right on the Baltic, is a great place tpo visit in Summer!

Have a good trip!

Barry

Is it true that Rostock is still a stronghold of neo-Nazism?

Hi Joanna -

Don't have a clue about the "neo-nazi" thing... there was certainly no overt eveidence of it. The people we encountered were all extremely friendly and glad to have us there.

It was a very interesting place to visit from a political standpoint though ... we got some great first hand stories and history of how things were under the domination of the Soviet Union for approx 40 years! The people are so thrilled to be "free" that they are very anxious to tell you about how things "were" vs the way things are today! For example, at the beach ( over at nearby Wandermunda (sp) )...(which was surrounded by fencing during the communist days)... you could not have a float back then becuase they government was afraid the people would try to float off the Denmark!!! Seriously !!!

Anyway... it's a great place to visit now :>)

Barry

I have just been to Lübeck last week. From there you can go by train to Hamburg (50 mins.) or to the seaside.(Travemünde). In 2 days you won't have more time. It,s a pretty city, we were staying in Hamburg and made a visit from there.
