North Yorkshire Questions

We will be in the Yorkshire are in April and may want to go to Catterick on April 23 for the 2PM race. Is Catterick a nice track to visit? Do we need a reservation and what is the dress code? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Yorkshire Dales

We plan to spend a few days in the Yorkshire Dales in April. I was thinking we might stay in Hawes or Malham but are open to other suggestions. We want to do some walks, export small villages and All Creatures area. Any recommendations for a place to stay.

North York Moors

We plan to spend a few days in North York Moors, any recommendations of places to stay.

Impossible to answer without more information - will you have a car? Public transport around here is sketchy to say the least (I live in Wensleydale).
What sort of accommodation do you want? Self-catering cottage? B&B? Hotel? Pub? There are hundreds of places!
All Creatures current series is filmed in Grassington which has a variety of places to stay.
Malham is lovely but makes for an impractical hub to visit other parts of the area quickly.

Please see my reply to your Dales query - there are hundreds of different places! What sort of thing are you looking for?

Why only the 2pm race? I sure there will a number of races throughout the day. I doubt that there is any dress code unless maybe if you opt for hospitality. The racecourse website has a special page for those new to racing, which I suggest that you read.

Masham is a more sensible base than Malham

Welcome to Fodors. You are running several threads about the same trip/North Yorkshire. They are sort of separate topics but really are related -- might be better to consolidate them??

Lots of info on their website, including buying tickets:

Seems a lot for a single race!

i would not only go for the 2:00 race, i would stay for the duration of the races.

we are planning to get a car when we arrive at Heathrow. We would probably want a B & B or hotel.

Are you also the OP?
Do not drive after a long haul flight. It is a really dangerous thing to do, for you and others on the road as you can have micro-sleeps, with potentially tragic consequences.

north York Moors

I apologize if I have already posted this, but I had some problems with this site and my computer. We also would like to spend some time in North York Moors. I would like to have close by access to walking along the water or the villages in that area, any recommendation for a location to stay. Thank you in advance.

Masham would be a good base. I also adore Helmsley - a lovely town with a castle and great places to eat. Rievaulx Abbey is on its doorstep and its not a million miles from York. There are some lovely villages nearby. The Star at Harome is a well known pub very near to Helmsley and famed for his food.

I'm slightly confused by all the different posts going on here, but I'm going to list below some lovely places to stay in North Yorkshire. Some are in the Dales, some the Moors and others close by.
I have no idea of your budget! Hope this kicks off some research.

If money were no object I'd stay at Grantley Hall Hotel, fabulous place but eye wateringly expensive. We go there for special occasions!
It's on the edge of the Dales and near to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, a World Heritage Site.
Grantley Hall | Luxury 5 Star Hotel in Ripon, North Yorkshire

We go to the Wensleydale Heifer (Dales) regularly - excellent seafood.

Another favourite (edge of Moors)

The Abbey Inn, Byland | Cosy Pub in North Yorkshire

The Black Swan at Oldstead (close to Moors)

Fountaine Inn (Dales)

Middleton Lodge is also great with a spa and two restaurants.

If you are a foodie then the Angel at Hetton is ideal. (Dales)

Yorebridge House has some gorgeous rooms, some with hot tubs. (Dales)

Morgana, thank you for all the recommendations. I am working on merging the posts.

Moderator1 Mar 14th, 2025 03:54 PM

We merged several threads all asking about North Yorkshire, and changed the title to cover all the different questions. tidy is the primary OP on this string and marshahansard3777 is the same member.

A few posts were deleted that questioned the multiple threads and screen names

Another thought - you could consider staying in Thirsk which is between the Dales and the Moors. It’s a small, bustling market town and has two things in particular that you might like.
Firstly it has a race course and there appears to be a meeting on 23rd April which is when you are in North Yorkshire.
Secondly it has a big All Creatures link in that it houses the Herriot Museum. This is where James Herriot lived, worked and wrote his books.

tidy Mar 16th, 2025 01:09 AM

Yes, I definitely will visit the museum. I believe the event you are talking about is the race at Catterick on the 23rd. Do you recommend the racecourse in Thirsk (race on the 22nd) or Catterick? I will look at lodging in Masham and Thirsk.
