North South Line archaeology

The new metro line in Amsterdam has given up a lot of archaeolgy during the digging of it.

Everything found has been catalogued as is available to view online here: https://belowthesurface.amsterdam/en

This article in the Guardian explains a bit about what has been found and why it was found there. https://www.theguardian.com/science/...terdams-canals

One of the stations, Rokin, will get an art installation that features these archaeology finds.

Thanks Heti for these interesting links/posts. Athens also has museum displays in their metro stations of the antiquities found while digging.

Just think what a treasure-trove of stuff there must be all around if a simple n-s metro line uncovered so many goodies. thanks for interesting post. London I believe with Cross Rail has hit some areas they had to slow down digging as similar stuff was found.

Gee they were working on that n-s metro in Amsterdam years ago - obviously in such terrain a Heraculean task for sure.

Absolutely. Wasn't plain sailing at all. Especially crossing the IJ and connecting to the metro system at Amsterdam CS was a hell of a task. But they ran into difficulties too. Huge budget overruns, historic buildings that subsided along Vijzelgracht, the disruption of De Pijp.

For Noord it will be a godsend, but already there are fears of gentrification and rising real estate prices.

Is this going to lead to a major redo of tram lines? Thanks

One of my favorite things to do: wander, get lost, find a tram line, repeat.

In London they had to mount laser reflectors on many buildings so they can watch the whole landscape move and then pump concrete into spaces to force the city back up (all technology designed to resolve the Pisa Tower from falling over). It is an engineering marvel. Lots of stuff on youtube

So when will Cross Rail finally open? To go from Heathrow to points all through central London will revolutionaize getting from airport to London - private car transfer operators may not be optimistic about that!
