North American Garmin

I bought a GARMIN NUVI 2589 LMT in Canada two years ago.
It states that it has « FREE LIFETIME MAPS AND TRAFFIC »
would i be able to download Italy on to it?
Thanks for any help!

I just checked the Garmin website and it looks like you can download Italy maps. Here’s the link:

Have you tried downloading maps on your smartphone with google maps?

If you download maps when you are on wifi you can use your smartphone without needing a data plan - your phone basically becomes your garmin.
I now use this feature as I can map out locations, restaurants, hotels, sites, etc on google maps using a computer, then access them as saved locations from my phone.

The garmin will provide lifetime map updates for the region it came with, but I believe downloading a new map (eg Europe) will cost you $$$.
Google maps is free.

I have frequently downloaded maps for Europe on North American Garmin, and Tom Tom. Sometimes you have to buy one of those tiny scan disc cards as there is not enough memory in your basic machine. Otherwise, I have always had good luck.

I’m one of those old fashioned people who doesn’t have a smart phone. But I will have an iPad with me, I should be able to do it on that, shouldn’t I?

Thank you. I’ve been checking on those.

If your Ipad has gps sensor, then yes. If not, then no.

I believe ipads with only wifi (not wifi+cellular) capability do NOT have gps

You can try this at home - load the google maps app onto the ipad, download a map of your neighborhood, then give it a try. Be sure to turn off wifi when you try it, as google maps can use wifi signals to pinpoint your location.

With what Garmin wants for the maps you could buy a basic no frills smartphone in Europe. Not saying you should but it gives you an idea on the relative cost.

Personally before buying the Garmin maps I'd think about buying a new GPS unit over here in Europe. for the money Garmin is charging just for the maps I'd expect you to find either a TomTom or Garmin unit and get change back

I’ll try that. Thanks!
