Normandy Guide
 

DH and I will be going to see the WWII sites in Normandy in May 08. There are many guidebooks. Unfortunately, my bookstores don't carry any of them. I will be ordering from Amazon, but would like to know about which ones other people have found helpful.

The Michelin Green Guide for on-the-spot touring, the Eyewitness Guides for planning, and if Cadogan has a Normandy guide I'd get that for fresh perspectives.

Anyone else have opinions on guides they have used in Normandy?

When we toured Normandy last year, we mainly used the "Michelin Green Guide to Normandy", supplemented with the "Rough Guide France". We are ardent fans of the Green Guides, which are uniformly excellent.

For the WWII related activities, we relied on "Major & Mrs. Holt’s Battlefield Guide to the Normandy Landing Beaches". This comes with a handy map.

As a guide to the sites and memorials of the Battle of Normandy, the Holt's guide cannot be beaten. It is comprehensive and authoritative with good maps and illustrations. Another useful guide is "A Traveller's Guide to D-Day and the Battle of Normandy" by Carl Shilleto and Mike Tolhurst.

For general guides, I certainly agree with St. Cirq's recommendation for the Michelin and Cadogan guides.
