I have been checking fares lately and am going to Italy late september/october.I am not sure if there are direct flights from JFK to Venice, What I do know is there is a consolidator fare from JFK to Milan for $436 traveling in October on Alitalia. It is easy to take a train to venice is 2.5 hr from cental station plus 1 hr to get to the central station. But fare is great, even If you do fly into Venice it takes one hour or so by boat or bus to get to Venice. The bus (by land) is about 25 minutes to P. Roma in Venice (for what that's worth).

Last time I checked, Delta still had non stop flights JFK to Venice.

I could not find a fare that cheap my computer says $1026 per ticket, that is why I recommended jfk Milan for $436 a savings of $1190 for two people worth a couple of train rides.RR

Delta does fly non-stop JFK to Venice. Since your flight isn't until October you could certainly sit tight and wait for fares to come down. They will, but not for a while yet (the fall sales generally are posted towards the end of summer, if memory serves). I fly to Italy in the fall pretty frequently, and have always gotten a better fare than the one you're looking at. It all depends on how much uncertainty you can stand, and how much you're willing to pay to have the tickets in your pocket already. I'd recommend waiting.

We flew Delta from JFK to Venice (w/ return from Rome)in late September. Used FF miles accrued on an affinity card. Booked thru the card's travel agent and price was about $650 per as I recall. (That was the cheapest price I had found on Expedia, etc.) Forget when I booked but think it was late Spring.

Flew home from Venice to JFK this summer on Delta, non-stop. Venice airport was brand new and very nice. Have a nice trip.
