We would like to be near Eiffel Tower (rue Cler area; that is where we stayed 15 years ago). Am thinking of reserving a junior suite at Hotel de la Paix - Porte de Versailles Paris, http://www.paix-paris-hotel.com. Their entire hotel has been smoke-free for two years. They have one double bed and two twins with two bathrooms for 171 euros cash/night.

If you are interested in the legal situation, the French government has a very informative website:
http://www.tabac.gouv.fr
You will find that in the Q&R section of "Lieux de Convivalité":
Q: Est-il interdit de fumer dans ma chambre d'hôtel?
R: Non, dans la mesure où elles peuvent être assimilées à un substitut de domicile. Toutefois, le responsable des lieux pourra en décider autrement.
Which with my little command of French translates to:
Hotel rooms count as a "replacement for private domicile", (so are not covered by the ban). Nevertheless, the propietor may decided otherwise.

OK, have confirmed with Hotel Montpensier near the Louvre; a quad with a double and two twins and bathroom. It has a higher % of recommendations to stay there than the other hotel and only a few negative reviews. They have all non-smoking rooms as well.

Finding clean modern lodgings in Paris is not hard IF you know where to look - sorry I didn't see your post earlier otherwise would have directed you to any of The Ibis Hotels which are offering a fantastic rate of 44euros per doubleroom en-suite. This would have been in your time frame of booking 20 days before arrival - It's called the "Happy 20" deal.
We are staying at The Ibis Esplanade La Defense for the third time in July because it has a great view of the River Seine and very easy Metro access.
This particular Ibis may be to 'outa town' for you but it only takes 10min before you arrive at the Arc de Triomphe by metro!

We are also thinking of Hotel Daval, which also sounds good and is located in the Latin Quarter. Does anyone have feedback on Hotel Monpensier vs. Hotel Daval?
I will also check out Hotel Ibis, per your kind recommendation. Merci!

HImom,
I can't tell you about the hotels but we stayed one street over from the Hotel Montpensier and really enjoyed the central and convenient location. We did a lot of walking but found being right near line 1 of the Metro to be very convenient. It was also a quick and lovely walk to the Seine and the 6th through the Louvre courtyard. Rue de Richelieu should be quiet as well.
There are many Japanese restaurants near your hotel. Also a good size Monoprix is on Ave. de l'Opera right next door to a Paris tourism office (where you can buy museum passes if you want them).

OK, have narrowed choices down to Hotel Ibis Paris Porte Vanves Parc des Expositions or Hotel Montpensier. Anyone hae any feedback? The Ibis looks much more modern but is not as centrally located as the latter hotel (which is older but recently renovated).
I think the kids would find the latter hotel location to be more fun and central, especially if folks want to nap for later fun in the evening. Anyone have personal experience with these hotels and/or locations?

I really think most people would prefer the more central location. Porte Vanves is like not even staying in Paris, it's for people going to business expositions. It isn't really Paris, actually. I doubt if you will enjoy walking around the neighborhood. It's about five blocks to the metro stop, also.

I stayed last July at a lovely hotel in the 10th arrondisment called the Taylor hotel that was very reasonable. My room was smoke free. I found the hotel on Trip Advisor - it was clean and simple, and the staff was very helpful

Thanks--we're confirmed at the Hotel Monpensier, which is near the Louvre and non-smoking. It is highly rated by TripAdvisor and had a reasonable room for our travel dates. We're very excited and will be buying a Paris Museum Pass, so we can enjoy all the wonderful sights in appropriate doses instead of trying to see it all in too short a time and ODing.
We were going to see Versailles, Louvre, Notre Dame, St. Chappelle. With the pass, we'll through in more, including perhpas Rodin and Cinima and perhaps a few others. I can see why my friend says there is never enough time in France for her to do it all!

OK, am trying to decide between Hotel de France (in 7th) and Hotel Montpensier (in 1st) in Paris. Does anyone have any personal experience and recommendations?
It will be the 1st time in Paris for both our kids (ages 20 & 22) & 2nd time for hubby & me. We will probably go to the Louvre and most of the tourist places and would be happy to walk to many of them. We would like something centrally located.
Merci!

Hi HM
>We would like something centrally located.<
www.ratp.fr will give you directions on using public transport from your hotel to anywhere in Paris.

In regards to air conditioning- even if you are used to the HI weather the difference would be that in HI you can open the windows and get a breeze. Depending on location, it's tough to open windows and sleep in Paris hotels because of traffic noise. Even in the hotels on back streets you get the early morning garbage trucks.
