Non Smoker Train, Munich to Rome??
 

According to the Austrian rail web site, the train from Munich to Rome, EC 85, is a non smoking train. Has anyone experienced that ride?

I fail to see how the non smoking could be enforced.

I think the question is clear. I don't see how a non smoking ban on a whole train can be enforced. If you know, tell me.

I have ridden in enough non smoking cars with active smokers who were unrestricted to think it was a legitimate question.

The smoking ban is working fine in Italy, in my limited experience, and based on reports from others. All trains in Italy are now non-smoking. I've read they have managed by levying huge fines on anyone who lights up.

I don't understand your comment BECAUSE if Italy can stop smoking in their trains and restaurants and cafes and all indoor public places, I would imagine that the Munich to Rome train can do the same.

What part of the nonsmoking rule do you not understand? As WillTravel stated, the nonsmoking rules are working very well. As YES I know that for a fact.

Appears that you are a smoker and so perhaps a bit uptight about not being able to smoke on your train ride?

Airlines have enforced their nonsmoking rules for years.

According to the DB website, smoking on these EC trains is ONLY prohibited in Italy.

I've never been in a train where people smoke in the non smoking section. People usually respect this and it is enforced.

The smoking section, when full, is incredibly smoky and sometimes people even smoke pot in it (and this on Swiss trains!)

Brookwood, you won't be able to smoke, unless you want to break the law as a guest in a foreign country, so get over it.

They manage to 'enforce' it, as you put it, because the vast majority of people of law abiding citizens.

It may have been a legitimate question - but LoveItaly's answer was also totally legitimate. She merely said she didn't understand what you meant (neither do I BTW)

How do you think smoking bans are enforced anywhere? Entire planes, airports, trains, cruise ships, shopping malls and millions of other places have and successfully enforce smoking bans. What ARE you asking?

But I am curious if you want to smoke or your don't want other people to.

I did see many people (including the conductor) hop off the train for a quick smoke when the train would stop in a station and hopped back on before the departure.

I'm unfamiliar with the laws to know if the platform is a non-smoking zone or not. Happily, they weren't on the train doing it though! :)

Yup.

If you light up on the train, the other passengers tear you limb from limb and through the pieces out the window.

The non-smoking ban is easy to enforce - it's enforced almost everywhere in NYC. Anyone who tries to smoke is told not to. If they continue they are escorted outside.
