Non golfing spouse in St. Andrews
As a non-golfing spouse I need suggestions for options in St. Andrews area and Troon. Any helpful hints are greatly appreciated!

There is a LOT to see/do in St Andrews. The castle/ beaches, Cathedral, restaurants etc. Or the nearby fishing villages -- easier by car but doable by public transport.
Royal Troon is right at the edge of the town so even if you don't have a car you can shop/eat. Or you could go to Ayr. But if you do have a car there is a lot to see in the area - primarily Culzean Castle which is magnificent. |
From Troon you can jump on the train to Glasgow...lots of sites lots of shopping, lovely people

If she drives, there's masses to see and do in Fife. Although I could easily kill time in St Andrews itself (email me for Word doc).
Troon a bit less. |
Thank you so much for all the info offered. Anyone want to comment on Oban and Iona. That trip is important to me, not so much to the golfer.

Oban is pretty much just a seaside town and ferry port. OK but not magnificent. Mull/Iona on the other hand IS magnificent.
What are your plans for the west coast -- answering piecemeal is pretty difficult. Are you planning on staying a couple of days on Mull and visiting Iona while there -- or are you just planning to use Oban as a base and taking a day bus tour over to Iona? Huge difference IMO. Also, what are you planning between Fife on the east coast and Oban on the west coast? Where else you are going could make a big difference. |
Oban is in a superb location; and a pleasant enough town. It suffers from lack of a good hotel (and it often rains).
Iona is to die for. Try to stay overnight |
