I forgot to mention one other adavantage in favor of the Plane Quiet headphones.
If the battery wears out, you lose the noise cancelling effect but you can still listen to music.
If the batteries wear out on the Bose, you can't continue listening to music.

I was a recording enginer for about 20-25 years and since then have been involved in many aspects of sound and sound reproduction. Sennheiser is considered an industry standard for microphones and headsets. I can't remember ever being in an upscale recording studio or radio station that didn't use Sennheiser.
Personally I've always been impressed with Dr. Bose's designs and theory, but I think that the products are outlandishly over-priced.
And I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard a musician say, "No Highs? No Lows? Of course not, man, It's a Bose!"

I am surprised that no one here has mentioned Shure E3Cs. My husband swears by them. You can usually find them for about $125. They come with a variety of different kinds of ear bud sleeves, or you can get ones that are custom made to fit your ear canal. Getting them in your ears can be tricky, but once they're in, you won't hear a thing aside from your music, which sounds great with these things.

Robespierre,
Was that link for travel essentials a sale that has expired? Just went to their website and the cost of the NC-6 is $52.
I know it's been nearly a month that you posted the $32 price, but it seems like a good deal and I would like to order a few at that price. ANY CHANCE?

Just got two pairs of JVC HA-NC100s yesterday. No flights coming up for a week or two, but used them in my rather noisy car running errands today. I don't plan to do that again - I'll miss hearing the sirens. Man, did those puppies work! Really felt like they were quite comparable to the Bose QC2s I've tried, but at $45 each (online - $80 MSRP) I could buy four pairs with tax & shipping for one of the QC2s.
I also tried a pair of $49 noise canceling 'phones last week at Radio Shack, and from their appearance I'm wondering if they're the PQs sold under Radio Shack's label. Such things happen. They were excellent also, but the JVCs are more comfortable and feel a little better made.
The Shures get a lot of good press but I don't like earbuds on flights - just personal preference.
Many airmiles coming up - will report back on the JVCs on return.

I picked up a pair of the Plane Quiet headphones for a good price on ebay. Don't remember exactly what I paid for them now, but it was significantly less than retail.
I've never tried the Bose, but I have been pleased with the PQ's - and they are much more affordable.

I repeated my earlier test of the Bose and Plane Quiet Headphones on a recent tranatlantic flight from Chicago to Paris and back.
The Bose were great but for a fraction of the cost the PQ's were virtually the same.

I'm sitting at my computer with my iPod in the Bose accessory - currently playing Wicked - looking at my collection of headphones, earbuds, etc., hanging on my wall. It's been a long, slow, sometimes painful process to get home to the Bose headphones.
I'm not an audiophile at all, I was just looking for comfort and ease. I tried the Shure E2c, and I generally travel with these because they are so portable.
I got the Bose - iPod now playing Mavericks - headphones for Christmas, and it was love at first wear. They weren't even attached to a musical device. The earpiece I equate to baby bunny paws cupping my ears. Soft pillowy clouds. And the music is excellent. I use the headphones on my tractor as I mow the field Sometimes the music is so good I mow twice. -iPod now playing Pacheibel.
I just ordered the Plane Quiet for my DH so he'll leave my Bose alone. Now if I could just get him to leave my tractor alone.
