No more Kilometrico pass?
 

Good evening Fodorites... My husband and I travelled around Italia for 4 weeks with a rail pass called the Kilometrico, 3000 kms, 20 stops, & up to 5 people can use the ticket. It was great and very economical. I think it was 330 Lira, a few years back! Has the price gone up a lot? and does that pass still exist... I can't seem to find it, and any info is from a few years back. The train from Roma to Napoli is 46 euro each... that seems to be very expensive... $300 AUD for a return ticket to Naples from Rome.. With doing other travel, Roma to Venice, or with a stop in Florence for a couple of days, are there cheaper options?

I don't think the Kilometrico pass has been around for a while. There are Italy Saverpasses for up to 5 people, up to 10 days in 2 months. But it's not necessarily more economical than point-to-point tickets. You need to check the fares of all the journeys you contemplate.

BTW, when I checked the fare for Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, I found 19.50 euros per person in standard second class on an InterCity train.

I think that particular train pass has been gone for almost 10 years. I am afraid that you will find the cost of a trip to Italy to be much much higher now. The bus would probably be cheaper than the train but much less convenient.

I don't think the cost of train travel in Italy has gone up so much. I think it's still one of the better travel bargains, particularly if you're willing to go second class and/or can take advantage of any fare discounts like Amica.

You can also look at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for pass options. Click on "Discover the InterRail passes" at the bottom of the Ticket Search box on the left side. For me, the results are in U.S. Dollars: 8 days of travel in one month, $309 1st class, $229 second class.

A pass is rarely economical for Italy. Where did you get a price of 46E? I suspect from a marked-up resell web site.
