No English Heritage Stonehenge tours in November; other options?
This Fodorite favorite is not available in November, when we will be in London (3rd, 4th, 5th). I thought I read somewhere that this is the only tour allowed in the inner circle. Is this true?
I found a link to Vic's Taxi (vicstaxi.com) in Salisbury & he advertises that he can connect folks to an inner circle tour guide. What are your thoughts - think this is legit? If it is legit, sounds like a good tour.
Also found that London Walks has a tour to Salisbury & Stonehenge, but not the inner circle.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks, Julie

Stonehenge is just as impressive when you see it from the outside--possibly more see, as you can view it in its entirety. That's especially true on a moonlit evening.
The current issue of National Geographic has a great article on Stonehenge.

Stonehenge is open to visitors year round - it is just the Inner Access that is not offered in Oct/Nov. Booking w/ someone else will not get you inner access since that is only available when English Heritage says so. No one else can get you inside. Even when booking w/ a 3rd party - they are booking through English Heritage.
So yes, you can visit Stonehenge in Nov, but no, you can't get inside the ropes . . . . . .

And just to clarify our experience in light of Underhill's point: When we did the Inner Circle access, we were inside/among the stones for an hour and then we were able to walk all the way around on the outside path -this was before the public arrived and actually after the others from our Inner Circle admission had left (nobody else stayed for a full hour). So in addition to the inner exploration with just a few others, we had the outer path and the whole view of Stonehenge all by ourselves.
JulieAgain, I'd check with English Heritage about whether there is a queue at opening, and try to be among the first admitted. Or see if there's another time of day that is sparse. They are still pretty cool from the path (but not as much from the road).

<<< One other suggestion: think about renting a car, which would allow you to visit the stones at Amesbury as well. >>>
It's Avebury, and it's easy to visit them from Stonehenge without a car

Thanks for your replies & clarifying the issue of getting to the inner circle. We'll go ahead and make the visit to Stonehenge. Maybe next time we will get there when the inner tours are available.
Thanks again, Julie

Both the regular and inner circle tours are great. The only problem with the after closing hour inner tour is that the gift shop is closed if you want any souvenirs.
We took our son, his wife and their 5 year old son on the inner circle tour Memorial Day 2007. It was 45 F and sleeting. Needless to say we didn't stay for the whole hour, but everyone enjoyed it. Even my son who had to thaw out his digital camera.
The grandson's still talking about the "stones".

DCJones, it was actually the same story for the morning access session. Nothing was open, not even somewhere to buy coffee. And we went to the later of the two (at that time of year) admission times. There was still a gap between the end of our hour and the regular opening hours, iirc.
