And either before or after Donegal, Co. Mayo has Achill Island.

Donegal is very picturesque and found very welcoming to all tourists.
Some of the attactions include Glenveagh National Park and Castle, Slieve League - highest sea-cliffs in Europe (near Carrick, Glencolmcille Folk Village Museum, sandy beaches, hill-walking, fishing, horse-riding/pony trekking, etc...
As for pubs and fun during July & August there's traditional music found in many pubs where the locals mix freely with the visitors and you can get a good sense of the friendly nature of the natives!!
A nice route would be from Donegal Town - Killybegs - Kilcar - Carrick - Ardara - Glenties - Dungloe - Falcarragh - Letterkenny - Buncrana - Malin Head (Irelands Most Northerly Point) - Carndonagh - Moville - Letterkenny - Ballybofey - Donegal Town.
This covers most of the county with plenty of choice for pit-stops (aka Pubs) along the way. It can be broken into "bits" to fit into your itinerary.
Hope this helps.

If you're a fan of Irish traditional music, two pubs that have great reputations are Hiudi's Bar in Buncrana (Altan started their career there and often play there still) and Leo's tavern in Crolly (www.leostavern.com). Leo is the father of Clannad and Enya. Both pubs are really worth taking time out to enjoy.

Wow, thanks for the tips. Pubs and music will be an intregal part of this trip. Anyone know about any music festivals or concerts between 9/8 and 9/17?
