Night Watchman's Tour/Rothenburg

If we stay at the Hotel Garni-Hornburg, which is outside the wall, can we still participate in the NightWatchman's tour? I seem to get the impression the tour is only for folks lodging inside the wall. Thanks, Rita

No, anybody who shows up can follow along. There is a request for donations AFTER the tour.

Rita, don't miss it. It is so much fun!
I also love the Hotel-Garni Hornburg, one of my favorite hotels in Europe. Martin and Gabriele are so charming and helpful and the rooms are lovely. Rothenburg is a fun town. We did all our shopping there and shipped it home.

Did you feel you missed something special by not staying within the walls?
We'll be there in May and this seems to be one of those "don't miss it" tours. Thanks for everyone's help.

The Hornburg is a stone's throw from the wall. The trade off for not staying within the walls is a lovely converted villa on beautifully kept grounds.

Rita:

Great Hotel! Anyone can take the tour (took it twice, so far!) The same gentlemen has been doing it for years! What a great job! You would think it would be 'corny' but it is very informative, and having Rothenburg as a backdrop!!! You'll love it! Get there early, and saddle up close to hear what he says!!
JOHN

We have done the tour 3 times. Just did it in November 01. He used to just ask for donations, he now collects at the start. The tour is still fun and a little different each time. Show up and you can take it regardless of where you stay.

Two good spots within the walls: MARKUSTURM and REICHS-KUTCHENMEISTER. We used the Markusturm in November and it was outstanding. You will see it pictured on many of the etchings of the city as it is built into the wall of the city. It is also an easy walk to the town square. Reichs is also very nice and has a nice restaurant even if you do not stay there. The non-smoking area is handy in smoke filled Germany.

We have probably been to Rothenburg 10 times over the last 30 years and have seen the changes. We always try to stay within the walls. Enjoy the city. It is touristy but fun to explore. My wife always does her shopping at Kathe Wohlfardts there (many shops, but definitely visit the main one) as she has found the prices are good and the shipping service almost beats you home. They are very well organized there. Check out the smoker men and the nut crackers.
