Night Train Advise please
 

My husband, 13 year old son and I are planning to take the night train from Rome to Paris in July. Suggestions on who to book the reservations with and which class of service? Any other advice will be appreciated since this is our first European train travel experience. Thanks.

I find night trains very unfulfilling.If I had done a night train for my first train experience in Europe I am guesing it would have been the last.I love the European trains but taking the night train is a different story.I would try to adjust your itinerary.IMHO, anywayz.

Given the cheap flights that are now more available between major European cities, I wouldn't do this unless you're looking for an uncomfortable experience.

I only have been on one night train, Venice to Rome, and it was the longest night of the 14 day trip. Felt like crap when we arrived, plus I would rather sit and enjoy the scenery.

I orginally had cheap air fare from Rome to Paris on AirLib but it is no longer flying so that's why we are taking the train. The rest of the flights seem outrageous from Rome to Paris. Anyother suggestions?<BR>The train seemed like the most economical way to get from point A to point B.

And it is the cheapest, but you should at least consider taking a daytime Italian Eurostar train to Turin and than a Tgv connection to Paris. This wll take less time and will allow you to see some nice scenary.

It will be fine. Have used night trains before and yes they are certainly cheaper than airfares now that Airlib are no longer around, and you also don't waste a whole day of your holidays on the train, and it also saves you one night of hotel costs. If you are young at heart I would definitely reccommend it for something different. There is a site on the web that gives you lots of info on night trains, will get back to you with this is it lets you know all the different seatings, and tips for a fun night. We are going from Paris to Venice in October and will just book directly through France's main train web site and pick up the tickets there, you can do this approx 2 months in advance. Night trains can be awful, even in first class. If you do it, make sure to get a private compartment.
