Nice/Villefranche/Monaco

Have 10 hours to explore area from our cruise ship. Looking for excursion and independent sightseeing advice. Will be there on September 13, 2017.

Which port is your ship docking?

Tulips May 27th, 2017 05:08 AM

Just take a taxi to Nice and explore. Go to the old town, stroll over the Promenade des Anglais, have a nice lunch on the beach if the weather is good. No need for an organised excursion.

WoinParis May 27th, 2017 06:02 AM

Nice is nice. Old Nice that is.

Pepper_von_snoot May 27th, 2017 07:00 AM

I would take a taxi to Nice Ville train station, buy a train ticket from one of the machines, and head to Beaulieu sur Mer/Cap St Jean Ferrat to see Villa Kerylos and Villa Ephrussi-Beatrice Rothschild.

You can have a nice lunch at Villa Ephrussi in a beautiful garden setting.

You can also walk along the glorious promenade and look at the sea in Beaulieu sur Mer.

Lots of shopping in Nice along Avenue Jean Medicin. Great views of the sea from Colline du Château.

I, personally, think Monaco-Monte Carlo is boring.

I agree with Thin. We used Uber quite a bit last fall while staying in St Jean Cap Ferrat. It was amazingly inexpensive compared to our rates at home.

Add my vote for Thin's plan; lovely places for a short visit.

Ditto, Monte Carlo = meh

Travelplannerguru May 28th, 2017 04:04 AM

Thanks for all the replies. The port is Nice(Villefranche).

Pepper_von_snoot May 28th, 2017 06:10 AM

Villefranche has it's own train station.

We too will have a day docked in Villefranche Sur Mer in a few weeks and will take the train to Antibes for a visit. We've been before and enjoy the morning market in Antibes, some nice shopping, people watching and walking the back streets. Will find a nice spot for a good meal and drinks and enjoy. No interest in Monaco and will be in Nice in October so this will be a good alternative.

PalenQ May 28th, 2017 12:56 PM

I like Antibes and Nice both for those hours - trains are great to either.

I'm with Thin.

Villa Ephrussi Rothschild was my favorite part of our visit to the Cote d'Azur.

The gardens and house are truly memorable.

If you can walk around St Jean Cap Ferrat shore and paths, it's pretty gorgeous.

To those using Uber:

Is my existing Uber ap on my phone adequate for use in Provence? Or do I have to download something for France. I have never used Uber overseas (from the U.S.)

Judy May 29th, 2017 02:29 AM

We didn't have to do anything to use our Uber apps. It works exactly the same in Europe as at home. They will not pick up in Monaco, however. They will drop off put cannot pick up as it is a different country.

Agree with Thin's plan. Monaco is a total waste of time IMO.
