Nice town near Salzburg?

I am planning our first trip to Austria. I don't have time to stay in both Salzburg and Halstatt so thought there was maybe somewhere in between so we could visit both but only stay in one hotel. Any suggestions for a town and for a nice, smaller accomodation - say 30 rooms or less?

Bad Ischl or St. Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee might fit your bill. They both have a number of hotels. Check their web sites.

I agree with Treplow. I would probably pick one of the towns on the Wolfgangsee, either St. Wolfgang or St. Gilgen. The Wolfgangsee is gorgeous, and either town would give you close access to the autobahn (to quickly get to Salzburg) and easily accessible to Hallstatt. Check out http://www.wolfgangsee.at/alias/wolfgangsee/small/en for more information.

We stayed in St. Gilgen last year at the Hotel Radesky. The town is a quaint little seaside town. We did day trips to Bretchesgarden and Salzburg. The hotel itself is a small, clean, basic hotel in the middle of town, close to the Wolfgansee. It was 100E per night for a large double room.

If I were to go back I would also check into the Post Hotel which is probably a bit more expensive, but is located right on a charming little square (more like circle).

Sorry, to make a correction, it is not really a "seaside" town, more like a lakeside town. Make sure to rent an electric boat and cruise around the Wolfgangsee.

I haven't stayed there, but Mondsee is beautiful and only about 25 kilometers from Salzburg.

Is there a web site for the Post Hotel, is it located on the lake. We would love to stay at a hotel with a lakeview that's not too pricey, can anyone recommend one. Is it better to stay in this area than right in the center of Salzburg if we're traveling early May.

suze, I used the link I gave above to find what I believe is the Post Hotel. Check out http://www.tiscover.at/at/guide/5011...home/home.html.

I think that where you stay depends on what you would like to do. If you prefer to stay in the city, Salzburg would obviously be a better location. If you prefer a more quiet setting, the towns on the Wolfgangsee are wonderful. Keep in mind that the towns are small and fairly quiet. We were there this past May and found this to be the case. We stayed in Schonau, near Berchtesgaden, and daytripped to St. Gilgen and Hallstatt.

The Post Hotel is not located right on the lake, although some of the rooms may have lake views.

When I was looking for a hotel in the area, someone recommended a website to me, I think it was a Bretchengaden Land website. I typed in my preferences and received quotes from many different hotels.

Sorry, I can't remember the website right now, I think Bob the Navigator actually recommended it.

The Berchtesgaden website is http://www.berchtesgadener-land.info...?B7DE771639234

If you are interested in staying in that area, it gives tons of great options.

Thank you. I am looking at St. Wolfgang and think this might be what I'm looking for. Appreciate the help.
