Nice to St Remy overnight stop in Cassis?
I am planning a trip in Oct 2014 and will be driving from Nice to St Remy. Before that we are spending 4 nights in Nice and plan to spend 3-4 days in St Remy exploring the towns/cities around.
Would Cassis be a good stopover (rest) point for 1 night or would people recommend that I drive straight to St Remy or are there other areas that I can consider? Any advices would be greatly appreciated!
This is my first time to France and I will be travelling with my partner who are in our thirties.

It is only about 2 1/2 hrs from Nice to St Remy. An overnight would be OK - but you'll get some seaside stuff in Nice and other cities around Nice (Villefranche). If you do stop in Cassis, that gives you only 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 days in Provence. Personally, I would skip Cassis and spend more time in Provence.

StuDudley is absolutely correct. I drove from Arles to Cassis and back this past October and think spending a night there would be a waste of time. You could walk around Cassis in about two hours then add a 60 - 90 minute boat tour of the Calanques. You'd get to see Cassis and be back on the road in under 4 hours. If I were going to spend the night somewhere on this drive, it would be in Aix.
Leave Nice, visit Cassis, spend the night in Aix.

Thanks both, I will relook at my plan and consider visiting instead of staying in Cassis. I currently have my Sat morning planned to visit the Sat market at Aix. However I just read today that there is a market at Uzes as well. Which is a better one to visit in your opinion? I do have on my Sun plan to visit the L'Isle sur la Sorgue market.

We love Uzes - stayed near there for 2 weeks a couple of years ago. Beautiful Place aux Herbes, with arcaded sidewalks on the perimeter of the Place. However, the market is held in the Place aux Herbes and completely obscures the views & the enjoyment if Uzes, IMO. I have read several posts here on Fodors saying the same thing. On the other hand, the Sat market in Aix is near a church & not in the middle of town, so it does not obscure anything. Also, if Sat is the day you drive from Nice to Provence, I don't think you can get to Uzes in time for the market. Like l'Isle sur la Sorgue, the Uzes market gets very crowded. In summer you won't want to be there after 10:30 and before it closes at 1:00, unless you love large crowds.
Do you have my 27 page Cote d'Azur/Provence itinerary that I've sent to over 3,000 people on Fodors? If not, e-mail me at [email protected] & I'll attach a copy to the reply e-mail. We've vacationed for 34 weeks in this region.

Yes I do have a copy of your itinerary Stu, it is very informative and helped with my planning a lot in fact that was how I decided to make St Remy my base for exploring the areas around Provence. Thanks so much for sharing.
The day I plan to visit the Sat market in Aix is when I originally planned to stay a night in Cassis (Friday) and then the following morning check-out early from Cassia then head straight to Aix before checking in at St Remy that night. However if I am not planning a night stay in Cassia now, I may need to look for another stopover point, unless I travel out from St Remy?

If you are going to the Sat market in Aix anyway, and had planned the night before in Cassis, as I think someone else suggested, visit Cassis on the way and stay in Aix. Do not back track from St Remy. Aix is lovely, a great place for dinner and overnight before the market.
