Yes, I stayed at the Northumberland dorm in 2007. LSE dorm was fine for what it is, but wasn't that cheap if I wanted an ensuite single. I just looked via your link and see they're slashing prices for summer 09, and a single at Northbumerland is £42/night. Of course, if I could persuade my husband to go, we can probably get some 4* fairly cheap on priceline. Or maybe I can ask around and see if I can find someone else to go ... I wonder what the airfare is from Boston? :?

Just discovering this trip report - enjoyed it very much!

thursdaysd May 27th, 2009 02:08 PM

yk - well, er, no. I've been starting work on the next trip, instead of finishing up the last one!

thursdaysd,

I'm loving your report! I put on a French CD as background music and am reliving your experience. I'm sure happy I didn't read this before I wrote my China TR. You're a most elegant writer! I've been to Nice probably 4 times over the last few years, and haven't seen all the places you've visited. Thanks for the wonderful ideas. If you return you must eat at La Zucca Magica http://www.lazuccamagica.com/index.p...mid=46&lang=en

We had the most wonderful dinner there last September.

Now, back to your report....

I'm so excited to read of your time in Nancy and Strasbourg. We'll be including both into our September trip. I know our time there will be much more rewarding after reading your descriptions.

My husbands decided I should contract out to you to write all my future TR's! Seriously, you're a very talented writer and I love your travel style.

Thanks so much for the inspiration.

thursdaysd Jun 17th, 2009 06:10 PM

Why thanks so much, images! But you write a perfectly fine TR yourself. Lots of us really enjoyed your China trip, and now I'm looking forward to reading about France. (I've bookmarked your restaurant suggestion, as I hope to get back to Nice some time.)

I think we have similar travel styles! Although I do take a tour every so often...

Thanks for such an informative and well-written report, thursdaysd!

bilboburgler Dec 4th, 2018 01:39 AM

Entertaining and well written.

Things have probably changed in the 9 years since it was written, though.

bilboburgler Dec 4th, 2018 03:07 AM

In Strasbourg, nah. :-)

thursdaysd Dec 4th, 2018 04:30 AM

Thanks for the compliments! I went back to Strasbourg and Nancy in 2015 and they didn't seem to have changed noticeably, although I was sick and the weather was bad and I didn't do as much as I had planned. (https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...south-1072099/ ) I've also been back to Nice several times, and it's only gotten better.

I'm glad this got topped. It is a great report. I'm especially interested in the Dijon part as I am planning to stop there next summer. It looks like you spent three days (nights?) and did one day trip to Beaune. And that felt like the right amount of time? I've not been to Dijon but did go to Beaune many years ago. Were there other day trips you considered? It sounds like other than the hospital in Beaune you were not that impressed with the town?

Anyway, thanks for a great report.

thursdaysd Dec 4th, 2018 07:15 AM

Isabel - I also did a vineyard tour. I did think that Beaune was over-hyped.

bilboburgler Dec 4th, 2018 07:46 AM

I don't think you want to the school of wine in Beaune, only the underground cellar. When we went, at least 10 years ago, we had to take the shop assistant's hand and walk her into the cave to taste the wines they were offering us, the first three were off. I'm assuming nowadays the place is packed and would not do that sort of thing.

The hotel des prelats in Nancy is still there at least. My wife goes there every 2 years.
