Nice or not so Nice?
 

Nice (France) tacky? I read that here somewhere. What do you think? Skip it or visit?

Very nice. Wonderful museums (Chagall, Contemporary, Matisse etc.), food, and parks and gardens. Also, a good base for sidetrips.

It was a bit of a letdown for me. I like to say I would have enjoyed it a lot more in my early 20s.<BR><BR>Provence is a few short hours west and so much Nicer. Lyon is a couple hours north and so much Nicer.<BR><BR>Have a great trip,<BR>j.

Jon - yes, agree to an extent but Nice after all is a reasonably big city - 600.000 or so, but is very &quot;manageable &quot; and as such its a very attractive, lively and &quot;ambiance&quot; city. Part of what makes Nice besides its own attractions, (Russian Orthodox church , Cimiez with its gardens and old monastery, (none of which are often metnioned) is its &quot;suburbs&quot; - all the attractions that are literally within a stones' throw - the pearched villages of the &quot;arriere-pays&quot; the dramatic coastline east of Nice, etc help make Nice a very good base to explore and discover. Often when we tour, we do not see the trees for the forest. After a great many visits, all I can say, is Nice increasingly grows on you. That takes nothing away from the other areas and cities mentioned. One of the great glories of france is the terrific diversity and regional differences within relatively small areas - Lyon is a sophisticated &quot;bourgois&quot; city - which Nice most definitely is not , but this is the attraction - each area/city has thier own unique attributes. It depends...on your tastes, where else you're going, how much time you have. After reading posts on this site for several months I've concluded many here prefer Cannes to Nice. Cannes is &quot;white&quot;- white buildings, lots of newer buildings to accommodate conventions etc. It feels cleaner. Cannes feels like it was made for tourists-and it was! The British really created it as a winter getaway. Nice is a real city- more bluey-grey. It's got great character, lots to offer &amp; has a gritty provencal charm. I like Nice very much but Ive never stayed there. I either stay up in the hills or in Villefranche. The whole area is wonderful. So don't skip it all. The only question is where to use as a base. Many on this site seem to stay in Villefranche, just a hop/skip away.

Geith,<BR><BR>We've been to Nice quite a lot, and wouldn't go back as often if we didn't love it. Nice is an unpretentious place, full of small lively cafes and great people watching along the promenade and in Vieux Nice. It's not nearly as posh as Cannes, but that's one of the best things about it. It feels much more real and alive. Have a great time!
