Nice or Marseilles hotels
 

Looking for a nice beach front hotel in either Nice or Marseilles for July.

Didn't you post yesterday looking for something outside the cities??
Anyway, we go to Nice quite a lot and always stay at the Westminster, which has rightly been called,"The poor man's Negresco." We love it there. It is on the Promenade des Anglais, just across the street from the sea. If you decide to stay there, make sure to ask for a seafront room, preferably on the 5th floor. All those rooms have small balconies with chairs, and waking up to the sight of the Mediterranean with the sun pouring into your room is just heaven. Also the location of the hotel is quite good. It's only about a fifteen minute ride from the airport, and about the same walking distance from Vieux Nice. If you'd like more info on Nice, just post again. I'd be happy to help with restaurant suggestions in and around Nice, etc.

04-93-82-45-35. Just so you know, if you stay there, you'll receive discount coupons for the pebble beach across the road, but you'll still have to come up with a small co-pay. This is pretty standard for the hotels in the area. Be insistent about asking for seafront, because the smaller back rooms have almost no view, and can be airless, while the front rooms can range from medium size to quite airy and spacious.
RESTAURANTS: La Meranda, 4 rue Terrasse in Vieux Nice. There's no phone, so you'll have to stop by during the day to add your name to the hosts' list, but it's well worth it! Excellent Mediterranean-style bistro food, ranging from meat falling off the bone lamb dishes to hearty stews and enormous fresh aspargus. DON CAMILLO,5 rue des Ponchettes, one of the most famous restaurants in Nice offers Provencal delicacies and an amazing cheese tray at the end of dinner.CHEZ MICHEL,11 rue Meyerbeer, great seafood,esp. their knockout bouillabaisse and sea bass. TAVERN MASSENA for some of the best pizza in Nice,in Vieux Nice, the famous LE SAFARI, a very down-to-earth place that features wonderful grilled vegetables, omelets, and fresh pastas. Address is: 1 cours Saleya. And, our favorite, which is about a 20 min. cab or car ride from Nice on the moyen-corniche: La Chaumiere, 3 rue de l'Observatoire. You eat in a small restaurant whose main dining room features the fireplace that your meal ( either chicken, lamb, or beef) will be grilled in! The most amazing vegetable basket, all fresh, some straight from their garden, comes to your table first along with excellent handmade tapas. Desserts range from mousses to tarts, to fresh fruit sorbets. This is a well-known place with the French who live in the area, and you have to call ahead to reserve. I am desperately looking for the phone number, and I will post it as soon as I find it again. This place is a one-of-a kind, and because of that, it's pricey. We paid about $200 for the two of us ( complete dinner with wine) a little over a year ago. It is really a treat! Also, I highly recommend a trip to St. Paul de Vence, if for nothing else than lunch at L'Colombe d'Or, a small hotel whose stone terraced restaurant hangs over the valley of St. Paul. The food and view are worth the trip, and St. Paul, a medieval town is lovely , although crowded in the summer. If you plan to go, make a reservation at the restaurant well ahead. It is very busy. Don't know if you'll have time for a quick trip to St. Jean Cap de Ferrat, which is only about fifteen minutes by cab or car ( 30 min by bus)from Nice. If you do, go down to the harbor, and try to eat at Le SLOOP, which has wonderful mussels and desserts. St. Jean has a lively harbor, and beautiful seaside cliff walk.If you need more info, just post again.

Here's the info as promised for La Chaumiere. It's at: 384 (not 3!!) Boulevard de L'Observatoire,(on the way to Eze) the phone in France is: 93-01-77-68. It is closed Sundays. Forgot also to mention that the last time we went there, Roger Moore and friends stopped in for dinner! It isn't cheap, as I said earlier, but the mushrooms, the pates, the glistening vegetables piled high in baskets more than make up for it. Really amazing. If you'd like to go, I'd call from the States,(and call way ahead) then make sure you call again when you get to Nice to reconfirm or they will cancel you.
Forgot to mention that some people will tell you that without a doubt, the main restaurant of the Hotel Negresco is the best in Nice. It is decorated in Louis XIV style, with food and prices to match. If this is your kind of thing, you can check it out. I haven't been there in a number of years. It's a little too grand for my taste.
