Nice or Cannes as home base

We will be in France this September and can't decide where our home base should be either Nice or Cannes. Any suggestions on where to stay?

I vote for Nice.

Stay in Nice if you want to be in a city. Stay in Antibes or Villefranche-sur-Mer if you want something smaller. Take a day trip to Cannes if you so desire.

I also vote for Nice. Between Nice and Antibes, Nice only has pebble beach. Water is clean but hard to walk on. Antibes has sand beach.

>>Water is clean but hard to walk on<<

I've had trouble doing that also.

I vote for Nice - much more to do there.

Absolutely Nice, unless you have too much money, in which case Cannes will absolutely help to siphon it off.

Nice for sure. Great galleries, lots of restaurants, excellent shops and so on..

Nice is nice.

Another vote for Nice. I never get bored there.

Another vote for Nice and dammit but Jean snitched my line. ;)

Hate to do this, but I vote for Cannes - you don't have to stay at the Gray d'ALbion or the Carlton!

Nice by a long shot. Not only for the restaurants, the old town, the museums and the (stony) beach, but also because it is a regional transportation hub and has a decent bus system.
