Nice: Hotel de la Mer or other near Old Town?

Does anyone know anything about the Hotel de la Mer in Nice on place Messina or can you suggest another reasonable priced hotel near Old Town and the sea?

Sue, we stayed at Hotel Felix on the Rue Messina, which is a pedestrian street in late August. It was a 2 star - no elevators so you may have to climb to the 5th floor depending on where your room is. Ensuite bathroom. I think it was about $50 for the night - don't remember how many francs.

The locaton was great. We had a room on the street - not too noisy, with a very small balcony. It was great in the evening when dinner was served, watching the people and listening to the strolling street musicians.

It is about three blocks from the sea.

Sue,

We stayed at Hotel de la Mer in 1999, and found it good for the price with an excellent location (one block from the beach, right in the center). We had an interior room with no view, but rooms on the outside should have a beautiful view of the green Place Massena. I wouldn't call it charming, but we would go back.

Diane and Ed,
Thanks for the info--I really didn't think anyone would respond.
Sue

We stayed at the Hotel de la Mer in 1996. The location is wonderful and the price was very good, but I wouldn't stay there again unless I was sure that it had been renovated - - or at least heavily cleaned. The indoor/outdoor carpet in the room looked dirty and everything seemed tacky and rundown. I'm used to bargain hotels, but I didn't care for the place.
