Nice, France - Reasonable Hotel Recs

Hello. We are traveling to Nice in late March and plan on staying 5 nights, basing ourselves there to do day trips to all the wonderful nearby locations. There are 3 of us in our 30s-40s. I've searched the forums for recommendations, and I apologize for the redundancey, but a lot of them were very dated responses (2002ish).

We are looking for a clean, confortable, yet economical room because we really just plan on sleeping there since our day trips will take us away from Nice. Breakfast would be nice but not essential. Maybe something close to the bus or train station? Maybe close to Old Nice?

Any suggestions would be so much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Last year we spent the first 2 weeks of May in Nice. We stayed at Le Lido It's directly behind Negressco. A young couple have remodeled 1st floor of apt bldg. (small elevator up 1 flight) there is a kitchen corner in each room and also a/c. Very neat and clean. The couple live in one apt. The weekly rate was 400 euro last year. We did day trips. This hotel is very well situated on bus line and only 1 block from the promanade anglais. Would go back there in a minute.

Thanks! I'll look into that one.

Has anyone heard of or stayed at the Hotel Saint Hubert? Their website looks cute and the prices are around 80 euros per night.

The Hotel Saint Hubert looks charming and I may try it, but it is not central.

Easy walking distance to Nice Gare Routière/Bus Terminal (for day trips). All 3 - 7 minutes walk.

Acanthe 1*
Kensington 3* (but felt more like 2*. Maybe bacause it has Air-con?)
Massena 3* + or 4*
Aston 4* a large hotel. closest to the Bus Terminal
Wilson 1* I think. The cheapest.

Coming from all above hotels, the Old Nice is just behind the bus terminal.

Here is a review of a hotel from SlowTrav.com: http://www.slowtrav.com/france/hotel...en+nice&s=nice

It is Le Meridien Nice (4 star), faces the sea, and is on the Promenade des Anglais.

BTW, if you end up deciding on an appartment instead, there are some terrific reviews, also on SlowTrav.com for Provence here: http://www.slowtrav.com/france/vr/list.asp?r=Provence

From my TR on Eastern France:

"I quite enjoyed my hotel in Nice, the Solara (http://www.hotel-solara-nice.cote.az...page_en_1.html ), although my room wasn't much bigger than my single in London, and the elevator was out of action for most of my stay. ... Really, my room was a good deal - en-suite, with a balcony, and just one long block off the Promenade des Anglais, it only cost me 50 euros. Since it came with a small fridge I was able to skip paying for breakfast, stocking up with orange juice and yoghurt from the nearby supermarket."

In the Fall, 2008, we stayed at the Hotel Durante in Nice and quite enjoyed it. It's nothing fancy but close-in and 3 blocks from the train station. We paid 70 Euros a night without breakfast.

Thanks everyone! We are booked at the Hotel Solara but can cancel up to 2 days prior if we find something else we like better.

I'm already starting to plan a trip for Spring 2011, so I thank you all for your hotel and apartment advice. My friend and I will be taking public transportation, using Nice as a base, to see towns in Provence and the Cote d'Azur. Any suggestions? I know Aix-en-Provence will be a must for me--- can this be a day trip from Nice? We are artists and teachers, so museums and Roman ruins will figure in our itinerary.
