Nice, France
Can anyone tell me how far apart the Nice airport and the train station are?? Thanks in advance!
|
There are three train stations in Nice. The main station is Nice Ville but about a 10 minute walk from the airport is Gare St. Augustin. If you don't have a lot of luggage it is an easy walk to this station from the airport.

Bus #99 runs non-stop from the airport to the Nice Ville station. The trip takes 30 min. and costs about E3.50. Bus #23 makes several stops between the airport and Nice Ville. The trip takes 50 min. and costs about E1.40.

I'm thinking we paid less than 10 euro for a taxi to the airport from central Nice. Is that right? As I recall taxis weren't very expensive. Just trying to give gertiegirl an idea of comparisons.

Ten euros sounds about right, depending on the traffic and time of day--certainly not much more.

Thanks for all the info everyone!

I got the bus information I posted above from Rick Steves' Provence & the French Riviera 2005 guidebook. Additional info: Bus #99 runs two times/hour and bus #23 runs four times/hour. (I rode bus #23 at the end of May.) According to the guidebook, taxis from the airport to central Nice are expensive (E30, not E10).

Does that mean R.S.guide book is completely wrong (I tend to trust some posters here than certain guide books)? |
kappa,
Guide books certainly are occasionally wrong. I tend to trust certain posters here more than printed information, especially if more than one poster offers specific, recent experience. And, this is just me, but I am suspicious of RS guides because, IMO, they have an agenda (their "back door" philosophy) that, in my own experience, has led me to lesser choices using their recs. Now, does that mean they are purposely lying about taxi rates? Probably not, but RS guides tend to try to encourage readers to takes public transport over taxis, and I might be suspicious of a taxi rate that seems out of line with posters' experiences. You may want to check the Nice airport's website, if they have one, and/or ask your lodgings for an estimate of the taxi costs. |
Well, I just had Central Taxi Riviera in Nice on the phone (I have so much time to kill now...), and was told "Il faut compter entre 25 et 30€ ". Also the Nice airport's site says the taxi cabs won't take check or credit card for payment.

Tuscanlifeedit, I did it before I read your suggestion, checked the airport site and called the taxi company that was listed. Well the result was above.

Having a light baggage for an over night trip, I always take a bus to get from the airport to Nice city center (usually got off at the beginning of Promedade de anglais to enjoy the walk along the beach till my hotel) so I have no personal experience but €30 seems too high for that distance. I'm surprised.

Last September we paid about 20 euros to get from the Vieux Nice area, at the far end of the Promenade des Anglais, to the Nice airport. Since the train station is much closer to the airport, I'd be very surprised if a taxi costs more than that--unless the gas prices have skyrocketed since our visit.

Since kappa called a taxi company for a rate quote, it looks like what Rick Steves says is correct (around E30)--in this case, at least. However, like any guidebook writer, he certainly is capable of giving wrong or out of date information. In his Provence & the French Riviera guidebook, for example, he says that all the rooms in the Maison de Mistral B&B in Joucas have valley views. Actually, two do and two don't. (I stayed in one that does.) In his Ireland guidebook he says that the cheapest bus from the Dublin airport to the center of the city take 90 minutes to make that trip. When I rode it, the time was 40 minutes one way and 30 minutes the other way.

We were in Nice last month, and paid 25E for a taxi from the airport to our hotel on Promenade des Anglais, which is about a 15-minute ride.
