nice drive from Salzburg to Passau (Germany)?

does anyone know of any nice scenic drives through Austria from Salzburg to Passau (Germany) ?

we are planning to leave Salzburg via the lakes area (Mattsee, etc) and head up towards Linz, but do not intend to go as far northeast as Linz.

are there any nice routes north leaving the Salzkammergut (lakes) region going up to Passau? I'd like to cut up north and forge a route along the Danube? Are the any nice towns east of Passau into Austria along the Danube?

any info is appreciated.

thanks,

brendan

One of the best trips that I've enjoyed in Europe was on the back roads of Germany. We took the secondary roads and stayed away from the Autobahn. We found many lovely, un-touristy villages and towns, family-run hotels and many delicious restaurants. The scenery was beautiful, and the pace was slower and more relaxing. The people were really lovely and friendly.

Some of my favorite places in the area that you mention are Mittenwald (town with legendary violin makers, picture-perfect with window boxes of huge red geraniums). Another favorite is Berchtesgaden, which was the home of Adolf Hitler, so it has historic significance, but has lovely scenery.

Best Regards,
Julia
