Nice Amsterdam neighborhood that is convenient to public transportation?

Our family of 5 is considering a trip to Amsterdam. We would like to rent a flat in a neighborhood that is nice, yet convenient to public transportation (to get us both around the city and around the country.) Suggestions?

Anybody?

The Jordaan is a popular area for tourists to stay.
Practically any apartments offered to tourists in Amsterdam will be in a good neighbourhood. Public transport is everywhere and easy to use, but walking is still the best way to get around most of central Amsterdam.

If you search the forum you will find various trip reports from people who have rented apartments.

We enjoyed the area near the Vondelpark. It was extremely quiet, yet very close to the museums and the tram runs right through it.

Thanks. What about convenience to the train station (that will get us to other cities)?

I second the Vondel Park area - you have the quietest and nicest in many ways IMO of any inner city neighborhood in Amsterdam - none of the Schlock in the centrum - neat little restos and cafes and constant trams to Centraal train station and also to the WTC-zuid train station that could be just as convenient or actually more easy to navigate than the hectic Amsterdam C.S. or Centraal station in the town center.

There are lots of nice small hotels around the east side of Vondel Park and that is the area I am on about - it is also a short enough walk from Museumplein and its world-famous museums and actually only a mile or so away.

Thank you!

We stayed in a hotel (Marriott) not far from Vondelpark and really liked the area. If you decide to go, repost and I will give you some ideas of what my kids liked most. We rented a car for a few days and took day trips to local areas while still staying in Amsterdam, and then moved on to Belgium.

and the east of Vondel Park area is a real neighborhood as well - with spiffy flats that locals actually live in - in areas in the Centrum along the canals many of the once residences seem to have been taken over by offices and bureaucrats - but in the Vondel Park area you have kids playing, local cafes and the park itself is, in nice weather, a beehive of activity of all types - if you have toddlers be sure to take them to the kids playground in the park at the Melk Huis - Milk House I think that's what it's called - an outdoor cafe overlooking a child's play area - sip of the drink of your choice whilst you kiddos play merrily! On a nice day many parents and their kids at this quintessential IMO Amsterdam or Dutch type place!
