Nice 2 or 3 Day Stay on the Coast North of Rome

After three days in Florence, six in Montalcino and before a few days in Rome, four of us are considering a two or three day stop somewhere on the coast. This would be the first week in September. Quaint and lovely with a view would be great, beach nice but not necessary - not overrun with other tourists would also be helpful. Just want to rest for a few days.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

well, I'm going to put in another plug for Orbetello, which is an estruscan/roman/ medieval town on the southern Tuscan coast about 150 kms north of Rome. it's not completely devoid of tourists as the romans like it, but even so it has a real local feel, with lots of nice restaurants.

Best of all it's on a lagoon so that there is sheltered swimming/ walking on some lovely long and secluded beaches which are backed by pine forests.

you can do day trips to Porto Ercole, Pitigliano, even the island of Gigli where the costa Concordia went down, should you so wish. Also it's great for cycling as it's pretty flat. a 3 night stop would probably be about right.

I do hope the lovely little island of Il Giglio is not going to be forever known as the place where the Concordia went down!

I agree that Orbetello is a nice town near the sea.

bvl - thank you for your tactful correction of my misspelling of il Giglio.
