Newbie Question on Rhodes

We are planning a trip to one Greek Island in the summertime. We were looking into Rhodes and was wondering if there is enough for a 10 day trip? We are an older couple and not looking for alot of nightlife, but somewhere with nice sites.

I was there for one day many years ago and really enjoyed it. It is an island, as to what you can do for ten days, kind of depends on your pace, I think, and what you want to do. I'm sure you could probably do 10 days if you like beaches, snorkeling and playing golf. The beaches aren't that great IMO, they aren't sand but pebbles. At least the one I went to was. Aside from the Rhodes town proper (which is very interesting Medieval town), there are a few castles and a church on the island, ruins of Kamiros, and an aquarium. I couldn't spend ten days there but hard to know about what you want to do. There are a few small villages you could putter around, I guess, depends on your pace.

I spent four days there this year and could easily spend four more. There was a lot I didn't have time for. I didn't do beaches at all, but I saw some that looked pretty nice if that's your thing. I believe there are several nice beach areas between Rhodes Town and Lindos. If you found yourself running short of things to do, you could always visit nearby Symi or even do a day-trip to Turkey.

If you want to spend that long on just one island I would pick Crete.

Cyprus or Rhodes would give you enough to do for 10 days. Rhodes old town is lovely. Enjoy but realise the place will be hot and busy. So aim for a fair number of siestas

Don't forget Lindos for a visit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindos

Seems a long time. Are you not going to Athens either? I found going to Athens and visiting the National Museum, then visiting the islands and then back to the museum gave me a much better understanding of the archaeology. But at least a visit on one end or the other.

JJ -- We all want to give you the most useful advice, but to do so, we need more information from you. Things that will make a difference in our recommendations include:

(1) are you from the US, and never been to Greece before, and maybe not going back again? or from UK or elsewhere in Europe when this may be just one of several trips there?

(2) "Summertime" means what? July-August = very hot +crowded. After Aug 20 or so, crowds lessen a bit, when families leave for school. Early September still summer but much better.

(3) Transport: are you up for car rental? Then you can get away from crowds perhaps.

(4) "Nice sites" = landscapes? in that category, I'd recommend Western Crete. Sail/fly in to Chania -- Old Town is wonderful to browse around in for 2 days, then rent a car, drive Any direction East on N. Shore - Fortezza at Rethymnon, amazing/poignant Cave of Melidon West & South- dalytrip drive: down Topolian Gorge rim … So from Rethymnon Spili and Palace of Phaistos, then Matala .. From So - North … Stay at Zakros … or drive thru wine country, stop at Dafnes in heart of vineyards, find world's oldest winery … stay south of Knossos, visit famous ruin. Drop car in Heraklion & Sail/fly back to Athens or wherever

Good hotel in Rhodes Town: Rodos Park Hotel. Has beautiful swimming pool. Located right outside the Amboise Gate of the Old Town.

There is a great sandy beach out near the Aquarium.

Definitely go to Lindos for the day or hire a car and driver to tour the island.

I think 10 days is excessive for Rodos.

4 is sufficient.

You can get ferries for day trips from Rodos if you run out of things to do there. I went to Symi which was lovely. And it's easy to get a ferry across to the Turkish coast for a day trip or even longer. If you use Rodos as a base and want a fairly relaxing time, 10 days isn't too long. But beware cruise ships... when they come in the place is crowded and very noisy.

I think ten days is too much. Four or five days would be perfect. Then I'd suggest moving on to either Crete, Santorini or Symi.

10 days is fine for Rhodes. It gives you time to get settled in and really explore. You don't say if you are renting a car but that will be helpful as it gives you lots of flexibility.
We spent a week in Lindos and took day trips around the island including South Crete and Rhodes towns and beach days.
Here are images of Rhodes.
