New Year's in London

Hello! We'll be spending New Year's in London visiting a friend over there for work. Never been before. Any suggestions, hotel, sights, Paris for New Year's eve?
Thanks

I have to say that unless you like being surrounded by lots of drunken people with nothing in particular to do except look at lots of drunken people, don't go into central London for N Y E.
Last year a special fireworks celebration was cancelled for bureaucratic reasons. The year before on Millennium Eve the transport system ground to a halt. Paris's Mill Eve fireworks were fantastic, however.

It might be that your friend might have a family occassion planned and that you might be invited to that.

If you go out to a pub etc. expect it to be very busy and expect getting a taxi back to be difficult and expensive.

Sorry to be such a misery-guts, but it is the truth. Maybe others will be able to be more positive about their experiences in Paris, or indeed London.

Thanks for the info. I just found out that he is going to be living in Birmingham, which is I guess about 1 1/2 hours outside London, so I don't know where we'll be!!!

Now Birmingham may be a much better bet than London for New Years Eve - they often have free concerts, fireworks etc in the city centre. I don't know about this year - your friend may be able to find out. For Millenium Eve, tickets were needed.
